*Sugar Free Cantaloupe Sorbet

By Neo-Homesteading (Visit website)

Lately I've been frantic with finding things that are a comfort to me while I roast in my 85 degree house, although I imagine it could be worse I'm definitely struggling with trying to stay cool. I've avoided the oven like the plague and I've been making LOTS of frozen treats. This delicate icy treat is a cantaloupe sorbet its somewhat reminiscent of an Icee but without the toxic coloring and miscellaneous additives.

I made this light sorbet with a perfectly ripened melon, fresh limes and a bit of sugar. Although my need for decadence keeps me from absolutely qualifying this as "dessert" it really is a light and refreshing treat, a palate cleanser if you will. Its got a pleasant and clean flavor, not a very robust flavor but its very well suited for cooling off or even better... cocktails! Not quite the traditional palate cleanser concept but its a mind cleanser at the very least and frankly its just what I've needed to hit the spot.

Cantaloupe Sorbet:
1 medium to large cantaloupe (very ripe so you don't have to add too much sweetener)
1/3 cup agave syrup
Zest and juice from 1 lime
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 teaspoons vodka
2 tablespoons-1/4 cup water

In a blender or food processor combine half of the melon, agave syrup, lime juice and zest, vanilla and vodka. You'll want to cut it into chunks however big you think your blender can handle. I cut mine into about 1-2" bits. Process or blend, if your machine does not want to do this thats when you start adding water. You don't want to dilute the already mild flavor of the melon though so its crucial to only use what you need. Once you've blended this mixture smooth add remaining cantaloupe, a little at a time until you've reached about 5 or 6 cups. I used my blenders measurements to insure I didn't make too much for my ice cream machine. If you have a really large melon you may have to reserve some. (set aside for snacking or ... hint hint freeze and blend with the cocktails) If your  mixture is cold process immediately in ice cream machine according to your manufacturers instructions, about 20-40 minutes. Serve as slush or freeze until hardened (about 2 hours)

*** You could use regular sugar or honey if you'd like, only add it as needed.

Cantaloupe Martini?-
I'm not quite sure what to call this mixture but I do know that its light and yummy.

1 cup cantaloupe sorbet
zest and juice from half of a lime
2-4 ounces vodka ,if you have melon flavored vodka that would be nice but definitely not necessary
+ ice

For a blended drink this would go amazing with frozen chunks of cantaloupe. Just blend and serve. Garnish with a lime and a smile.
