Approved by the Management!

By Skint Vegan (Visit website)

My kids - like most under-tens - still find entertainment in simple things. A case in point - the kids received a load of lovely gifts from friends and family at Christmastime. Today, I got a grocery delivery from Approved Foods, that came packaged in two MASSIVE cardboard boxes. So obviously, all their new toys have been completely ignored and they've made themselves an impromptu camper van out of boxes and masking tape, with bubble wrap curtains. Brilliant!!
So, they're happy with my delivery, and I must confess - so am I! The concept behind Approved Foods is not a new one. Food that is close to or just beyond it's expiry date is sold off at a considerable discount to normal retail price. They're not selling perishables - it's mostly dried, jarred and tinned goods. 4 jars of mayola vegan lemon mayo for £2, cases of pinto beans, broth mix and TVP for a pound each, cases of raisin and dried blueberry pouches for a penny each etc. etc. I was pleasantly surprised how much on their site was suitable for vegetarians and vegans and if you can get yourself past the psychological barrier of 'best before' dates, there's nothing to stop you making a considerable saving while stocking up some reliable storecupboard staples. I have enough broth mix for the next year - we all love Scotch broth here! - and enough pinto beans for the next three months. I've already tried them in a creamy chickpea-pinto hummus. Verdict? Delicious! Same cooking and soaking time and same great flavour, plus it worked out cheaper to buy it this way than at the Indian Supermarket which is my next cheapest option. And for anyone who cares about branding, the majority of these were Sainsburys products, so a well-known, reliable UK name.
Of course, it's not for everyone, but if you have a family to feed on a budget and you're concerned about the obscene amount of waste that supermarkets generate by throwing away perfectly good food daily, then I suggest you check them out!
In other News, I think I may have accidentally stumbled across our family motto while pressing some tofu...

Nek'd bread not an option... !

As validated by this toasted multigrain bagel I enjoyed for lunch with a spot of tofu salad, lettuce and alfalfa sprouts - yum!

Over and out...
