Betty Crocker Brownies

By Cooking With the Dark Side (Visit website)

This recipe comes from a 1969 Betty Crocker cookbook.  My mom, grandma and aunt all had copies.  They are all used and are the go to cookbook in my house.

This recipe on page 139 is called a tradtional fudgy brownie--a favorite with everyone!

Brownies

4 ounces unsweetened chocolate
2/3 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
4 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/4 cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 cup chopped nuts (I left out; but I bet walnuts would be really good)

Heat oven to 350.  Grease baking pan, 13X9X2 inches.  Melt chocolate and shortening in large saucepan over low heat.  Remove from heat.  Mix in sugar, eggs and vanilla.  Stir in remaining ingredients.  Spread in pan.

Bake for 30 minutes or until brownies start to pull away from sides of pan.  Do not over bake.  Cool slightly.  Cut into bars.  If desired frost with chocolate icing.

Betty recommends the Glossy Chocolate Frosting on page 125.  Unless I have canned icing I don't bother.  For some reason I'm incapable of making homemade icing--it always winds up as a glaze!

Verdict--good in a pinch, but they will never be as good as my Glamour magazine brownies!  They are coming soon.
