Brauhaus Sion - one of Cologne's best breweries!

It is strange how I ended up having a great GERMAN meal in Cologne. Duesseldorf has its fair share of it of course but I do not patronise German breweries until I have at least an accomplice in tow or a gang of 4 to 10. The portions are that big. German breweries or brauhaus is not exactly a brewery in its sense. It does brew its own beer but it also serves food. Thus I introduce Brauhaus Sion.

Tucked not so far away from the Cologne Dom, about 10 minutes walk in exact, Brauhaus Sion has the reputation for serving up 1/2 meter sausages or according to our waiter Mr. Hanske,

you can even ask for 1 meter sausages to be served. That takes up the whole table. This time round, we ordered the traditional German Pork Knuckle served with German green cabbage and roasted potatoes, a 1/4 meter sausage with the same sides and an apple pancake (which I did not take a picture of). Trust me, three dishes is enough for four Asians. Our waiter was also very helpful in terms of the portions.

Trust me you would have devoured every single piece of meat, morsel you could get your hands on. German pork knuckles are normally the size of a turkey leg, if not bigger. Not easily prepared, though many have asked whether I could prepare it for them, the skin has to be roasted properly to have its crunchiness just right so you could devour it as well. In tradition, most German dishes are eaten with mustard. In between the tanginess of the French mustard and the pungent-ness of the Japanese Wasabe, I find German mustard to be my taste.

So after dolloping a good portion of mustard on my plate, we began eating. Rani, my colleague from home had the time of her life eating her first traditional German meal. This was how the plate looked like after we finished eating.

The interior (should have taken more photos) was quite innovative. The ceiling was made out of recycled beer kegs.

Imagine the time they took to put that together? In any case the meal was utterly satisfying on a not so cold autumn day in November. It was a fitting departing meal for Rani as well since she was flying off the same day too. The food was entirely expensive either as many Germans patronise German breweries for their beers. Oh yes, it is interesting how my table did not order the Cologne beer called Koelsh. We are not big beer drinkers and therefore, we skipped having it this time round. In any case, German food without German beer is still a treat!

So what was my take on it?

Ambience                        5/5
Food                               5/5
Drinks                             4/5 (I don't drink beer that much remember?)
Price                               4/5

Average price per person                      Euro 12.00 (main meal + 1 drink)

Go easy on the beer, you don't want to be carried away when you end up leaving the brewery. So having blogged about Japanese, Italian and the like, I figured German food was in line to be featured. Where can you find the brewery?
