Cake Pops
I finally made my first batch of cake pops this evening. I was so excited about getting around to making them! I've been wanting to try these since I first saw them months ago, finally decided to make some for the boys for Easter. The basic idea for these is very easy - just bake a cake according to package directions (or whip up your own if you're a baker). Let the cake cool and then instead of icing the cake, break it up into pieces and put in a gallon ziplock bag, add a can of frosting and smash it all up until worked into a dough like consistency. Roll into balls and then put them in the freezer for at least a half an hour to help hold them together. Meanwhile melt your chocolate. Stick lollipop sticks in the cake balls, dip in chocolate and then dip in sprinkles if desired and let dry until chocolate coating it set well. Easy right? Well, let me tell you from this experience, it's not quite that easy. The cake balls need to be much smaller than I made them. I made them about the size of a tootsie pop when they really should have been the size of those teeny little dum-dum lollipops to keep them from falling off the sticks and plopping right into the chocolate - Every. Single. Time. These make a pretty little treat for times you need a big batch of individual items - the kids class parties or something like that, but they were time consuming and difficult to work with. Who knows, maybe I was just being too impatient this evening. Let me know how you do if you decided to try them!
