Confessions of a Beer Lover

By THE CANDID RD (Visit website)

I'm a dietitian who believes it's important to practice what I preach. Believe it or not I've met quite a few dietitians whose diets are far from healthy. I just don't understand it. First of all, why would anyone listen to an RD who eats crap? Second of all, how could someone who studies nutrition still feel comfortable putting so much crap in their body? Who knows.

If you step into our kitchen, you'll see we have lots of healthy foods.

Almond butter, steel cut oats, flaxseed, rice cakes (hey, they're whole grain!), oatmeal, quinoa....

Natural peanut butter, popcorn, black beans, more almond butter, extra virgin olive oil, Smart Balance canola oil, balsamic vinaigrette, almond milk, soy milk, potato chips (well at least they are 40% reduced fat! hehe).....

And of course plenty of fresh produce.

But in order to truly practice what I preach, I must allow myself some treats! I've already confessed that I love coffee and chocolate, but I'll be honest, beer is at the top of that list.

Every year, on November 1st, Columbus, Ohio gets their YEARLY supply of Great Lakes Christmas Ale. I say yearly because we literally get a bunch of beer sent to all of our grocery stores from the Great Lakes brewery up in Cleveland, and then that's it, it's gone. It's sent one time, and is typically out of stock before Christmas even starts, no joke.

This year, I was prepared.

It's great working at a grocery store that has one of (if not the) best selections of beer in town. I grabbed two cases before we even began selling it.

I also bought some of my second favorite winter beer; Harpoon Winter Warmer.

Both of these beers taste like Christmas in a bottle. They are spiced with nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, and honey. What's not to love? Most often at holiday parties I am happy to give up my dessert for a full glass of one of these delicious brews.

Let's not forget that according to the American Heart Association, one alcoholic beverage a day for women, and two a day for men, has actually been linked to some impressive heart benefits.

CHEERS!

QUESTION: What's your favorite holiday drink?
