El Greco

By Eat, Drink and Be Aware (Visit website)

Good Evening!

We have had a great Saturday.  We mixed it up a bit and decided to use one of our Restaurant.com certificates and ended up shopping at the Wheatsville Food Co-Op.  No Whole Foods trip today.  We ended up going to El Greco.

El Greco, or "The Greek", is a fresh, new Greek Restaurant located on 31st & Guadalupe, North of the U.T. campus in Austin, Texas. Using generations of family recipes, Chef Jake Konstantinidis delivers truly authentic Greek cuisine that appeals to diverse palates.

Open for lunch and dinner, El Greco offers traditional appetisers, entrees, and desserts including vegetarian and vegan fare as well as Greek beers and wines to complete the Mediterranean cuisine. Delivery and catering are available in most of the Austin metro and surrounding area.

This is a cute casual dining place that had great fresh food.  I love greek food and was excited to go and check this place out.  The place is family run and you can tell.  The staff is extremely friendly and helpful and really make sure that your dining experience is going well.

I ordered the hummus dip and pita along with the Greek Village Salad.

The hummus was definitely homemade and absolutely fresh and delicious.  The pita was also extremely fresh and had a dusting of nice spice on top.  We all enjoyed the hummus.
The Greek Village Salad was your classic greek salad with romaine lettuce, cucumber, red onion, tomatoes, bell peppers, olives and feta cheese.  Fresh  and delicious.
Steve ordered the classic Gyro Sandwich.  The difference is that this is definitely hand-made not pre fabricated meat, it is spit-roasted pork tenderloin wrapped in fresh pita with lettuce, tomato and tzatiki sauce. I tried a bite and it was amazing.
Emmet is my soup boy and he ordered a huge bowl of Chicken Avgolemono, a chicken and rice soup tempered with an egg in a lemon-scented broth.
The soup was amazing.  I loved the lemon broth.  Emmet could not quite finish the bowl but gave it a good try.

All in all, this was a great place to go and enjoy some greek food and I would definitely pop back in for a bite.  We then headed across the street to the Wheatsville Food Co-op.

This is located near the UT Campus and I have been wanting to check out this grocery store for a while now.  It almost looked like I was not going to be able to because the power went out in the neighborhood for about 15 minutes.  They had to close the store down so we waited it out and the lights came back on and we did a little shopping.  This is a great store and it reminded me of the beloved Trader Joe's.  How I wish Trader Joe's would come to Austin.  In the meantime, I am going to have to take a little trip down to the Wheatsville Co-op from time to time.

At Wheatsville we focus on quality and equality. While offering a full range of organic and natural foods and the best selection of locally-produced food products, we also carry the traditional American staples you'd expect to see at the corner grocer.

More than just a healthful, economic way to support the local economy, we're fun too. Wheatsville is a great place to relax on patio, grab a quick lunch, catch up on local events, or just meet some of the nicest folks you'd ever hope to find.
Whether your taste runs toward local beer or organic wines, smoothies or sodas - Wheatsville has it covered.

The prices are great here and even better if you become a co-op member.  The selection of food was awesome and I honestly wish I lived a bit closer to really take advantage of membership into the co-op.

What makes Wheatsville different?
WE OWN IT! Wheatsville is owned and operated by people just like you - folks willing to work together to provide for themselves. The motivating purpose of co-ops is to serve the needs of the members, not to generate a profit. When the co-op makes a profit, it is cycled back into Wheatsville to increase our services for you, the owner, or if sufficient profit is made, it given back to the owners in the form of a patronage refund. Join us in our mission to provide high-quality food and nondoctrinaire information about food to the Austin community.

I picked up a few things that I am excited about.  I have been wanting to try Chia Seeds and picked up a bag of Ultimate Chialife Chia Seeds.  This is another easy thing to incorporate into your diet, similar to flaxseed.  I have big plans for breakfast tomorrow and can't wait to start adding these into my diet.

The other thing I picked up is not quite so healthy.... my obsession continues.  I happened to find Hand Made Peanut Butter Cups at the Wheatsville Co-op and could not leave without them.  These are made with Earth Balance Peanut Butter, graham crackers, Ghirardelli Chocolate Chips and soy milk.

Check this out!  Is it not a thing of beauty?  I am not sure what is going on with me and this Chocolate Peanut Butter fixation but I seem to be on the hunt for the best peanut butter cup around.  I am thinking that I should make some myself.

This peanut butter cup was interesting because the graham crackers were mixed into the peanut butter and it made for a slightly crunchy texture.  I thoroughly enjoyed this but my husband is more of a purist and thinks the Reese's Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups are better.  He said he thought is was "vegany".  Oh brother.

I have a great recipe that I am going to make tomorrow and am looking forward to sharing it with you.  This is an oldie but a goodie and I will be thinking about New Orleans tomorrow while I am making them because I swear we lived off these for years.

Off for now, I hope you enjoy the rest of your evening.
