FFFY vs Dominos

Domino's Vegi Volcano Slice

I like to think that home cooked pizzas will always be the most delicious you can eat, with the added benefit of being fun to make! Still, there are times when it’s hard to resist a cheeky takeaway pizza!

So, when Dominos challenged me to re-create one of their pizzas, and also pick up the tab for my troubles, I jumped at the chance!

The challenge was simple. Order one of their pizzas. Photograph it, eat it, then buy some ingredients and create my own version.

Domino's Vegi Volcano

I chose the Vegi Volcano with a thin base. The pizza had a nice fiery kick from the jalapenos, lots of extra cheese and a very thin and crispy base. The toppings can be easily copied, but the sauce and slightly creamy texture of the cheese would need some tricks to pull off.

Here’s my recipe for the Vegi Volcano pizza, which will make around two 33cm pizzas with a little dough and quite a bit of tomato sauce left over.

To achieve the best base possible I recommend you invest in a Swift “Crispy Crust” Pizza pan, which you can find under Baking in my online shop! This is a non stick pan with holes in the bottom, which helps to evenly cook and crisp up the base of your pizza, avoiding the soggy pizza problems that you can sometimes get at home.

Serves 2

Pizza base

1 batch of pizza dough

Hot and spicy tomato sauce

onion, chopped
1 tin plum tomatoes
2 tsp tomato puree
½ tsp chilli seeds
1 pinch cayenne pepper
1 tbsp creme fraiche
Olive oil
Salt and pepper

Vegi Volcano toppings

100g cheddar cheese, grated
200g mozzarella, thinly sliced
¼ green pepper, chopped
¼ red onion, finely sliced
½ tomato, roughly chopped
1 tbsp jalapeño Pepper

Make the dough by following the excellent recipe already on this site, or in your bread maker, if you have one. Leave the dough to rise in the fridge, until needed.

Fry the onions in a little olive oil, for about 20 minutes. Add all the other sauce ingredients, apart from the creme fraiche, and continue to cook for another 10 minutes. Blend to a smooth sauce with a stick blender and leave to cool.

Pre-heat your oven to 200°C.

Pull off ½-1/3 of the dough and place on your pizza tray. Stretch and press to the edges of the tray. (I have no tricks for making this easy, but would love to hear some in the comments!)

Mix 2 tablespoons of tomato sauce, with 1 tablespoon of creme fraiche and spread evenly over your pizza base, all the way to the edges.

Top with the cheese, then the rest of the toppings and place in the oven for 20-30 minutes. Remove once turning slightly brown round the edges, and the base is cooked.

Allow to cool slightly before eating, or you’ll burn your mouth!

The Verdict

This was a great challenge for me, as I had to think about ways to improve my existing pizza recipes and it resulted in the best pizza I’ve ever made – even my girlfriend agrees!

FFFY Vegi Volcano Slice

The version I made tasted very similar to what was delivered from Domino’s, with a slow burning hotness that I love, but it was impossible to re-create their thin base. However, by using my new Crispy Crust Pizza Pan, a little creme fraiche for a creamy sauce and spreading the toppings all the way to the edges of the pizza, I think I created something better? Try for yourself and see!
