FLAX SEED
GROUND FLAX SEED I have discovered ground flax seed for Omega 3?s. I used to take flax seed oil capsules, but now that I know about ground flax seed and how it?s a whole food as opposed to just the oil taken out, I?m a-switchin? over to ground flax seed. (Beware that ?flax seed meal? is not the whole seed. Don?t get that.) It?s easy to find flax seed in the bulk section of most grocery stores. It looks like this: Your body cannot digest the whole seed, so you have to grind it. A spice grinder or a coffee grinder works great. Food processors and blenders don?t work well at all for grinding flax seed. I use my spice grinder. Once ground, store in your refrigerator or freezer to avoid spoilage. I store mine in the freezer. I just take it out of the freezer and sprinkle it immediately on my food and return to the freezer. No need to thaw. Janice Stanger, THE PERFECT FORMULA DIET author, recommends 2T. of ground flax seed daily, but I have not gotten to that point yet. Here?s some ways to get your ground flax seed into your day. Great information about flax seed here. · Sprinkle on your hot or cold cereal · Sprinkle on a bowl of cut fruit · Add it to your favorite vegan loaf recipe · Add it to vegan bread, muffin, etc. recipes · Add it to casseroles · Sprinkle it on casseroles as a topping · Mix some into your non-dairy yogurt · Add it to vegan patty recipes · Sprinkle on freshly steamed veggies I bet you get the picture! It?s pretty versatile, and once you get used to the taste and texture (didn?t take long for me) you will find ways to fit it into your daily meal plan. See here about flax seed safety and possible side effects.
