Food Festival Fun
This weekend was the annual Greek Food Festival here in SF and I decided that it would be the perfect place for lunch today. These types of events almost always have relevant live music and vendors selling "authentic" products from the motherland and all of that is great but the truth is, I'm there for the food. My husband and I warmed up with food from 3 out of 4 of the outdoor booths (gyro, haloumi on pita, and calamari - we skipped the "Greek garlic fries"). If you have never had haloumi, you must try it. Many grocery stores and cheese shops sell it. It's easy to prepare - we usually slice it in half so that we have two thin slices, brush them with some diluted honey, and throw them on the grill. After those appetizers, we went inside where this menu was presented and where we had to make some tough choices because we were starting to fill up. We opted for dolmades, greek salad with feta cheese, moussaka, and spanakopita (the best of the inside items we tried). After all of that, we had no space left for dessert, but we visited the pastry area anyway and got ourselves a to-go box with a variety of goodies, including loukoumades - Greek donut holes soaked in honey and topped with chopped walnuts. Holy hell those were delicious (I know I said it was a to-go box, but we had to sample these while they were still hot!). I've decided that I need to be actively on the lookout for upcoming food festivals because they are just good, delicious food fun. If you're aware of any, please leave the details in a comment.
