For our birthday boy
![]() Our oldest boy is now Five years old. We had a little party for him today, and I baked him a cake. Not surprisingly the Chocolate Malteser Cake has once again made an appearance. Now Master Five requested a dinosaur cake. A friend of his had recently had a party and had a cake that was a dinosaur. A bought cake, something I had no chance of replicating unless I got the phone number of the bakery it was bought from. Not keen on this for so many reasons. How then to satisfy my Beautiful Boy when he wants dinosaurs, but is stuck with a Mummy who loves him lots, but wont be buying a cake, and has no hope of creating a cake that's dinosaur-looking - she knows her limitations. What you see above was the cake I made for Miss (now) Seven. It's amateurish I know, though my daughter thought it was fabulous - mauve dino, blue spots and green spikes was the order, this I managed. Tasted ordinary though. Dry cake, too much sugar in the decorations. I'd rather eat a plain cake, that the above. Seriously, I'm not going there again. I know, because I have seen, what my own fellow bloggers are capable of within the pages of this very blog. You can have a delicious and beautiful cake all at once, but not from me, not from my oven. So, I explained to my darling boy, that I would bake him a cake, but it would be a regular round cake. The Chocolate Malteser Cake was his choice. He loves that cake, as does Miss Seven. I enjoy it too. It's from Feast and while not my favourite from The Chocolate Cake Hall of Fame is, as with every Nigella chocolate cake, really yummy and easy. I made the cake, sprinkled on some green nonpareils into a five and popped on some 'happy birthday' candles. Then, I used a packet of plastic dinosaurs and bag of maltesers to decorate around the cake. I splodged some of the icing around the circumference of the cake, which held the animals and chocolates in place. The results were still amateurish - I AM an amateur, but the expression on the children's faces was all that mattered. This worked, and joy of joys, I am told this was the best because 'we got to play with the cake decorations after too!'. The cake was delicious, the birthday boy was thrilled, and I didn't need to part with a large some of money for some flour, sugar and eggs to be turned into an (admittedly) very spectacular creation. All I was looking for was a happy little boy and this was managed! This made the cook/Mummy feel most contented and even clever!Happy Birthday my Sunshine! My Beautiful Boy is FIVE!
