Seasonal Delight: Grapes The fleshy, juicy globules are flooding the market. Relax, we aren?t talking about a chemical weapon but rich and succulent grapes. Sweet or a li?l sour, they are a rich source of nutrients... Pop some today!
Black/red grapes in particular are rich in resveratrol and quercetin, both potent antioxidants. They act as free radical scavengers, reducing platelet aggregation and preventing atherosclerosis (plaque in arterial walls), thus boosting heart health. Reserveratrol is pretty effective in shielding the body against cancer. It also reduces the risk of gastric ulcers, strokes, inflammatory diseases and osteoporosis.
Grapes form a very good source of calcium, phosphorus, iron, vitamin C and essential amino acids.
Grapes are proven health promoters. They help counter emaciation as they aid weight gain. Grape juice provides relief in nosebleeds, blood vomiting, excessive thirst and painful/excessive urination. Dried grapes (kishmish) strengthen the lungs as they combat catarrh, cough, asthma, expectoration of mucus as well as tuberculosis.
Drinking a glass of fresh grape juice first thing in the morning provides immense relief from migraine.
Grapes are also known to promote milk production, so they are great for lactating mothers. They are also beneficial for teething babies.
Grapes aid in the healing of wounds. They improve vision, whet appetite, clarify vocal chords, clear the bowels and also function as aphrodisiacs.

In Ayurveda, grapes are referred to as draksha and known for cooling and pacifying kapha and pitta imbalances. However, sour grapes can produce hyperacidity if you have a sensitive stomach!
