Huskies Football Bento Box

By hapa bento (Visit website)

At the start of football season I wrote about bento box snacking at a Seattle Seahawk NFL game using a recycled container.   Packing your own snacks or lunch, not only saves you the shock of stadium food prices, but it’s  a “green activity” too.  No lecture here, but a friendly reminder to limit waste whenever possible.

Those ready-to-eat meals packed in the disposable/recyclable containers…they make excellent bento boxes.  So do those plastic cake and cookie containers from the supermarket bakery.  If you have an occasion when you can’t or rather not carry back the empties.  Just place it in the closest recycle bin.   Sporting events. concerts and movies are the perfect venue for reusing commercial food containers.  You don’t have to worry about loosing or breaking a cute box!

This weekend for Saba Man is a football weekend.  Today the Dawgs and tomorrow the Hawks!   Today’s game features a purple and “gold” themed lunch.  As you can guess, the bento reflects the school colors.  Alas,  I don’t have the talent or patience to scultpt a husky dog, the school mascot, from a ball of rice so we have to settle for some stickers on toothpicks!  I happened to have some Husky stickers in the “junk drawer” but never had a reason to use them until now!

The purple and “gold” colors were pretty easy to do, eggs are yellow… yellow being an acceptable stand-in for gold and I had a frozen stash of black sticky rice, which turns purple when cooked. :)   (Again, that is some really good looking rice.)  Tamagoyaki is a natural item for easy outdoor eating and musubi stuffed with shoyu tuna is also good finger food.   I think the photo displays an adequate attempt at Husky team spirit!

My dilemma is tomorrow’s  game.  The Seahawk colors are blue, whtie and bright green!  O_o   I re-checked my junk drawer and there are no Seahawk stickers in there.  Any ideas football fans???

Shoyu Tuna

1 can water packed albacore or white meat tuna packed

1 tablespoon mayonaise (yes, mayonaise)

shoyu and Mirin  to taste

Add all ingredients to a non-stick skillet.  Cook on med-high heat, stirring contantly until thouroughly mixed.   Eat “as is” with rice or stuff inside musubi.  Great in omelets too!
