Iron week, day 6. Friday [already? phew!]
Friday:
Breakfast: Leftover mashed potato and cheese Snack: Coffee, herbal tea... and gluten free squiggles. Lunch: A jacket potato and a mouthful of liver. Eww. Snack: Green tea, squiggles, coffee. Tea: White rice with beef stew/casserole thing and kale. Snack: Gluten free squiggles, water, corn chips. Overall: Today really shouldn't be included in "iron week" - what a ridiculous looking effort! Shame on me! Please note: I'm not anemic, I just recognized that my iron levels were progressively getting lower, which of course, can lead to anemia. I've been there before, it's not nice.Question: What are the symptoms of low iron or anemia?[With thanks to this website for most of the info] Often, no symptomsPalenessFeeling tiredUnusual shortness of breath during exerciseFast heartbeatCold hands and feetBrittle nailsHeadachesDizziness or lightheadednessI'm no doctor, but I know that when you're low on iron you feel lethargic [but isn't that a symptom for most things?], cold and if you're really low; the whites of your eyes look a bit yellow, the red skin inside your eyelids isn't as red as it should be and your nails change colour. In short, it's awful but you don't usually know it's happening until you get the blood test. I used to do this heaps. It's really comfy when you're exhausted.Who is likely to be low on iron? Or, am I in a high risk group? Pregnant or breastfeeding women. They need 2½ times much iron as men, which is why most expectant mums take iron supplements. NOTE: If you're pregnant be careful about consuming liver. It contains high levels of Vitamin A which can harm a baby.Any women. Stereotypically we don't eat very much meat and don't actually have enough iron in our daily diets. Also, those with heavy periods are probably low on iron.Blood loss. "Internal bleeding, usually in the digestive tract. A stomach ulcer, ulcerative colitis, cancer, or taking aspirin or similar medicine for a long time can cause bleeding in your stomach or intestines. That's why it's important to find the reason for a low iron level." Oh... and also menstruation, full stop. [or if you're from the US: period. Haha, sorry. I'm so mature.] Vegetarians/vegans. Non-heme iron, found in veggies is not as easily absorbed as heme iron, found in meat.People with digestive/gastroenterol disorders such as coeliacs. Gluten attacks the intestine wall, damages it and makes it pretty much impossible to absorb nutrients like iron. If you've just started going gluten free it's a good idea to talk to your Dr about taking an iron supplement to help get you back on track. If you must take iron pills, for whatever reason, check out these awesome tips from this website: "Tips on taking iron pills: Take the pills with food.Start slowly. Try taking 1 pill a day for 3 to 5 days, then 2 pills a day until you aren't bothered by that amount. Increase the number of pills until you're taking the amount your doctor recommended.Increase the fiber in your diet if you have constipation. This is worth trying, even though fiber may get in the way of how well your body can absorb iron. You'll still be able to absorb some iron, and it's better than not taking any iron if you need it.Don't take iron pills at bedtime if they upset your stomach. If one type of iron pill causes problems, talk to your doctor about trying a different formula or brand." Conclusion: If you're a woman the odds that you're low-ish in iron are pretty high. When you visit your Dr next time get your blood checked! There is no point being low on an essential mineral when you can fix the problem! Do it! By the way, when I finish my assignments [next week, woo!] I'll be having a cooking bonanza! I can feel the pressure building up inside me, if I don't bake something soon I'll explode! But for now, at least, walking to the kitchen to pour hot water over my green tea-bag will have to suffice. I've got way too many assignments to do. related searches : Iron
