Let's be Caribbean for a day - Bamboula is your place :)

By donnowhere2eat (Visit website)

I stay in a part of London that is predominantly Afro-Caribbean and I am proud to be part of that community. Brixton is known for its colourful and loud natured environment and boasts a bevy of restaurants that run from European to Asian. However, my one favourite haunt in Brixton is Bamboula. Possibly the best Afro-Caribbean food one can get, the restaurant is located off Brixton's high street, so it's not too noisy. My dad and I went to Bamboula for lunch after tossing around a few options and since he's never been there before, why not try it out right?

The restaurant was decorated with plenty of bamboo, painted with loads of tropical flowers and plants and brightly coloured walls, the place can sit 20 at any one time. But the restaurant is so popular that the line for take out is immensely popular. Lunch time tends to be quieter which is a good thing as you are guaranteed a place to sit. Dinner comes and there will be a line. Either you call ahead to reserve a table or stand about 30 minutes at any one time for a table. Yes, it is that good.

We ordered two lunch menus. One was the Bamboula Jerk Lamb. A signature dish comprising of rice and peas, plantains, salad and a whopping portion of jerk lamb. The price has gone up since but at GBP7.50, it is well worth your visit at the portions are spilling out of the plate!

Bamboula Jerk Lamb

The lamb was fantastic. Falling off the bone, not rubbery and tastes like a piece of Caribbean all rolled into one. Seriously, it was fantastically delicious. The accompaniments were a good blend for the already powerful meat and trust me, you'd never want to trade your plate for anything else. It has a slight spicyness to the taste which is probably reflective of the Jamaican taste buds but one can only imagine the taste. I have never personally been to Jamaica so this is just assuming that they eat spicy.

The second lunch menu we had was the Satisfaction, a serving of 1/4 jerk chicken served with rice and peas, plantains and salad. At a mere GBP 5.50, seriously, this plate can feed two meals. I for one don't eat as much, and we were left with a heaping portion of left overs.

Satisfaction

Strange how I like Jerk Chicken here but never the ones by Nando's. Needless to say, the portion and the price is definitely a bonus point and kudos to Bamboula for the standard it has kept for the many years it has opened. The chicken, despite being served the breast, was succulent. Falling off the bone once more, it proved to be every bit as tasty as the Lamb. One could only imagine, if we weren't full from the first dish, we'd have devoured this to the bone, leaving nothing behind. Alas, our tummies were already packed and thus had to give up half way.

The service albeit a little slow during the day was really friendly. One reason why I keep coming back for more food :) My last visit was with my sister and we cracked the house! The waiters would definitely remember us for life as we sat there, talking to the waiters and poking fun at each other at the same time.

Prices however defer for dinner but still well worth your time and money to go.

So what is my verdict?

Ambience                   4/5
Food                          5/5
Drinks                        4/5 (they actually serve Guava Juice)
Price                          4/5 (based on lunch set menus)

Average price per person:               GBP7.50 (lunch set menu includes drink)
