Lucky Penny

By Gratinee (Visit website)

I’m not much of a wine connoisseur.  Once in awhile I’ll come across a fabulous wine and stock up on it Drink it until someone puts  one in my hand that is even better.

For the longest time I wouldn’t touch white wine. Then someone introduced me to a Gewurztraminer. After that I tried a Riesling by Germany’s Dr. Loosen and I was a convert. I have never found a white that I like better–until now.

I have discovered Lucky Penny, a new wine from Australia, from the makers of Yellow Tail. The wine is available in both red and white. Although the red is very good, I personally prefer Malbecs. But can I just tell you I love, love, love the white?

They’re not paying me to say that, either. I admit the company did sent me some to sample. I don’t always accept samples, as I don’t want to feel compelled to say something positive about a product that isn’t first rate. But since I have always liked Yellow Tail, I thought I’d give these two varietals a try and I’m glad I did.

For one thing, they’re different. Blends of grapes that together, strike the right cord. The Lucky Penny White is made of Chardonnay (65%), Vionier (20%) and Pinot Grigio (15%).  A blend of pear, honey, and apricot notes somehow achieves a perfect balance in this fruity wine. Wonderful to share on the patio on a warm summer evening. I find that, for me, it goes down more smoothly than the whites I’ve been drinking lately.

The Lucky Penny Red is a traditional Australian blend of Shiraz (50%), Cabarnet Sauvignon (30%) and Merlot (30%). Three flavours are also prominent in this wine–blueberry, chocolate, and vanilla. It tastes slightly peppery, with hints of spice and clove.

I think either of these wines would pair beautifully with numerous dishes. I for one am planning on the Lucky Penny White with my next wild mushroom risotto.

Both wines are available in BC liquor stores for $17.99.

If you try one, I’d love to know what you think.
