Malaya Inn

Posted the05/07/2009 By Melbourne's bargain foodie (Visit website)

Apart from Indosari and Bamboe , this is one the restaurants in melbourne that i visit when i yearn for hometown food. This Malaysian/ Singaporean restaurant is located in Doncaster, they do serve dishes to share like most Asian restaurant, but what gets me excited is their "hawker-style food".

Mee Rebus ($10.80)

Not many things get me drooling as wildly as Mee Rebus ( Boiled noodles), is an egg noodle dish from Malaysia/ Singapore/Indonesian region. Blanched egg noodles are drenched in malay style peanut sauce, hard boiled eggs, beansprouts, cubed tofu, fried shallots and chicken/prawn meat. This lovely combination of ingredients gives rise to a hearty, filling, delicious meal.

The Mee Rebus at Malaya Inn, although nice in terms of flavours, lacked the "peanutish texture" that I always look for in a Mee Rebus. It is a personal thing mind. I like my peanut sauce to be slighty coarse, not too fine. Nonetheless, the flavours are great, and I will be more than happy to order the Mee Rebus at Malaya inn.

"Black" Carrot Cake AKA Chait Tow Kway($10.80)

This is Carrot Cake Singaporean style, not the sweet/cake version. This delicious concoction of daikon and rice cakes contains no carrots at all, can be ordered either "black" or "white". The black carrot cake is drizzled with sweet soy sauce and tossed with eggs, spring onions, etc. The version at Malaya inn was great, I will be happy to if I were have this in a hawker centre in Singapore. (Hawker centres are the life-line for Singapore cuisines! ) JFYI, the one best one I have ever had is in Bukit Timah, Singapore.

Ice Chendol ($4.80)

To cap it off, how can you resist a delightful Ice chendol?
