Moscow restaurants guide

By Food story (Visit website)

It's fine with Italian restaurants in Moscow. Good French, Spanish, Chinese or Japanese places are harder to find. Picking a right Indian or Thai restaurant can be really hard. If you are an expat in Moscow, plan travelling to Moscow or simply live in Moscow, here?s are the restaurants that might be of interest to you. These are simply places I like and keep visiting. Browse the list below or read the blog posts about Moscow restaurants. For interesting cafes and bakeries, check out the Moscow cafes and bakeries guide.

Zu cafe is a relatively recent Asian restaurant with a chef is from Shanghai. Zu offers slightly Europeanized pan-Asian food. I like their choice of wok and dim sum. Spicy sweet and sour soup is also great. I like the Novy Arbat branch which is quiet and tidy, perfect to have a relaxed talk with light and healthy lunch.

Mi piace is an Italian cafe with good food. Last time I had mozzarella ravioli and ginger-melon lemonade. The design of the space feels quiet and calming (especially Tverskaya branch). One can sit there for hours chatting and snacking their beautiful cookies and sipping tea with natural jams. Here is my post about Mi piace.

Druzhba is the most authentic Chinese place I know so far. It is lively, warm and noisy with Chinese waiters running around. The food brings up memories of China town in Singapore, comes fast in generous servings. Here is my post about Druzhba.

Barashka is an Azerbaijani cuisine restaurant. I visited the place just once so far and really appreciated its food. Arbat branch interior is very comfortable. It makes me want to stay long, drinking good wine and talking.

Jean-Jaques is a very French cafe. That's where we first met with Insead MBA admits from Moscow to get to know each other before going to Fontainebleau and Singapore. Salad de chevre chaud, plateau de fromages, soupe normande a l'oignon... I'd never believe I'll start missing France so fast. If you're bored, take a pencil and draw on the tables paper cover.

Maharaja - Indian restaurant with really good food and moderate prices. It's located next to the Moscow Indian embassy and the embassy staff is among its clients. The restaurant is ran by an Indian family. I got used to Indian food in Paris, eating in restaurants that my Indian fellow students considered good. In Maharaja we had lassi, samosas, dal makhani, palak paneer with rice and roti and the food felt just right.

Benvenuto became our family favorite Italian restaurant after it opened next to where we live. I love its great large sofas. If you book in advance, you can also get a curtained private table. The waiters are extremely attentive. It's perfect for a family dinner out with its wine and garlic focaccia, caprese, Lombardia salad, seafood risotto, Toscanian style salmon, carbonara pizza and home made ice-cream. They also provide food delivery.

Correa's is a fusion cafe founded by celebrity chef. I keep meeting different opinions about the place, however I'm one of its returning clients. I like its contemporary interior and relaxing atmosphere. The food I got to try there (chicken caesar, potato salad and tomatoes with mozzarella di buffala) was extremely well cooked and served.

Avocado is a vegetarian cafe. Its menu is elaborate and gathers many international dishes from grilled camambert with raspberry jam to guacamole, eggplant caesar, fondue, risotto and fried rice. Very good food (especially avocado tartar, mushroom risotto and fried soba noodle). Pretty and calm inside.

Venezia is a very central Italian fine dining restaurant. It's located right next to the trattoria with same name, so don't confuse the two. The restaurant feels good for a special occasion when you want to make sure the setting, food and service will leave you happy.

Viaggio another casual Italian dining, which I prefer for meeting friends (especially when it's over 4 people). It's a small chain, however every branch has own style. My favorite is Palermo branch on Dorogomilovskaya street. It has warming golden red interior and open kitchen which lets you watch the pizzaiolo. Black spaghetti with almond from its special sicilian menu page are wonderful. So is risotto pescatore and whichever pizza you'll chose.
