Mukkala Pappu - Mixed Vegetable Dal
Mixed vegetable dal (Mukkala Pappu) can be prepared with any combination of vegetables and I like to experiment with different vegetables and dals every time I prepare this. Usually potatoes, tomato, mango, brinjal, ridge gourd etc are preferable, but the list has no boundaries. You can use different dals and pack this dish with full of proteins.
Ingredients: 1/3 cup toor dal (kandi pappu) 1/4 cup baby lima beans (optional) (you can use any of your choice) 1/8 cup masoor dal 2 cups mixed vegetables (I used 1/2 mango, 1 tomato, 4 small red radish, 4 broccoli florets, 1 medium size purple brinjal cut into 1'' cubes). 3 or 4 green chillies 3/4 tbsp tamarind paste 1 tsp dhaniya/coriander powder 1/2 tsp turmeric powder For talimpu/tadka 2 tsp oil and 1 or 2 tsp ghee 1 tsp mustard seeds 1 tsp jeera 1 tsp urad dal (minapa pappu) 3 or 4 red chillies 1 or 2 garlic cloves curry leaves few salt to taste Preparation: Wash and soak dals for 15 minutes (I did because I used lima beans, if you are not using no need to soak). In a pressure cooker, place all dals, vegetables, green chillies, turmeric powder and add 2- 21/2 cups of water and cook for 3 whistles. Keep aside and cool completely. Open and mash with back of a spoon. Add tamarind paste, dhaniya powder, cook for 5 minutes until the tamarind mix well. In a small kadai, heat oil+ghee, do the popu/tadka, add to the dal, stir in salt and switch off. Serve with hot rice. Sending this Suma's Delicious Dals from India.
