Nites Out: Germany

I would like to write about food not prepared by me, whenever I have the fortunate chance to eat out.   Once I have a couple posts, there will be a new tab to display the collection of local food stops. 


My mind,  rather my tummy , is grumbling with anticipation!


Plus, I have this need to photograph food while travelling abroad.  Since I want to learn how to make so many tasty dishes, the first thing to do is try them first hand.  The pictures help me remember for later experimentation and inspiration! 


To get Nites Out started, I will recant one of my last trips to Germany.

 The first evening I found myself in the hotel’s restaurant.  After a long day hopping and skipping across the Atlantic, I wanted to quickly refuel then crash before the meeting in the morning.  I wish I could remember what type of fish this was, but I do remember the delicate crust and light lemon-scented butter sauce.  I was surprised that I finished the whole plate!


The host company took the group for a tour of an old castle once the meeting concluded.



I had half a day for further exploring before catching my plane home.  These were taken in Schwetzingen, Baden-Wurttemberg Region, Germany…



This picture reminds me of those glasses I used to have – before they were stolen from my car, outside of my house!  Who takes prescription glasses anyways?  Do many thieves have problems with distances or need to spot the police before they get caught?  If you have my glasses, I would love to have them back.  There’s no need to turn you in, just send me the specs please!


Anywho, back to the pictures of Germany.



There is a huge garden with all sorts of sculptures in nooks built by the walls of greenery.  At the far end you find a pond with lounging ducks, swans, and large carp greeting you at the edge of the dark pool.



The palace gardens is also home to an Orangerie, a building which was erected during autumn to protect the orange, lemon, and lime trees from frost.  In spring the building is removed to let the bees pollinate the trees and keep the crop growing.  There are still citrus trees there today!



I had my fill of spargel  since I was attending a meeting during Spargelzeit (the white asparagus season in May-June) where every good German restaurant highlights the menu with the local prize.  So instead of even more delicious white veg, I enjoyed a warm Schweine-Schnitzel with a mushroom sauce and fresh spaetzle for lunch after walking the palace grounds.

Now I have to remember to bring a camera along with my appetite.
