Novel excerpts
This entry isn't about food, but since my blog is also about writing and travel, I thought I'd post links to three novel excerpts.
The first, "Like Smoke," is from my first novel, Burning Green Sun, which was agented for a year but didn't find the support necessary to get published. Even so, this excerpt, which I modified slightly to make it self-contained, appeared last year in the final issue of Ontario Review, shortly after the passing of its editor (and husband of Joyce Carol Oates), Raymond Smith. The second excerpt is the first chapter of my second novel, Lotusland. I'm currently revising the novel, including the chapter I'm posting here. Despite its status as a draft, it shows something of my intentions for this work. The third excerpt is the first draft of my third novel, which is as yet untitled. I haven't worked on it in some time, unfortunately, and posting it here is kind of an attempt to force myself to be accountable for what I've started. It's very rough, and I probably shouldn't even post it, but sometimes discomfort is a good motivator to make something better.
