O Canada! Night 1 of the Olympics and Olympic-inspired meals!
Happy Friday night, everyone! And happy first night of the Olympics! I hope everyone takes a moment to think about and pray for the family of the Georgian luger that lost his life today:(
On a happier note, tonight starts what I've been so excited for - meals inspired by Winter Olympic Countries! I've really enjoyed the research I've done so far, and I'm hoping all of these meals turn out alright! Please Please PLEASE provide tips and feedback, and if I make a meal from your country incorrectly, let me know:) Night 1: Canada! Poutine and Meatpie! Meatpie, have made it a bunch of time, no problem, but always thought it was French...well doing research, found out it's Canadian, but I would guess French Canadian:) But first, let's start with Poutine. As soon as I told the husband my idea to do these Olympic meals, his first request was Poutine. I have to say, I took the easy road on this one as I kept finding recipes asking for cheese curds...what the heck are cheese curds?? Anyways, this was super easy and the husband loved them and ate the whole tray! Success! All you need is: bagged french fries - I used about a 1/4 of the bag since it's just the 2 of us and it was just an appetizerone jar of homestyle beef gravyparmesan cheesePreheat oven to 450. Bake fries at 450 for 15 minutes, or until they are to your liking. At the same time, heat gravy in a sauce pan over medium heat, covered. Once the fries are cooked thru, remove them from the oven, cover with the gravy, and then cover both with parmesan cheese. Place the fries back in the oven with the mixture on top and bake an additional 5 minutes, or until cheese slightly melts. NOTE - I used grated parm cheese - I would suggest, and next time I would try, shredded parm cheese, because I think it will melt better:) Now, the main dish, a favorite in my family, meatpie! So easy and so yummy! I can't remember if I've blogged about this before, but if I have worth, so what, it's worth repeating:) You will need: 1 lb hamburg1/2 lb ground pork1/2 lg white onion, grated or cut into bite sized pieces3-4 large potatoes, peeled, and made into mashed potatoes 2 ready-made pie crustsCook hamburg, ground pork, and onion in a medium fry pan, sprayed with Pam, over medium high heat until meat is cooked thru.At the same time, make your mashed potatoes. Once both are made, combine the potatoes and meat into a large bowl and mix together. Place one of the pie crusts into the pie plate, and dish the meat/potatoes mixture into that crust. Cover with the 2nd crust and bake at a pre-heated 400 degree oven for about 30 minutes, or until the top crust is browned to your liking. I like to eat it plain like this, some people, I won't mention any names, cover it with ketchup, which I think is "nasty." But to each their own;) Yay! So happy to be off on this adventure! Now if only I was an actual Olympian...I can't skate, or ski, or bobsled though....curling? Maybe next time! See you all tomorrow night for night #2!! Which country do you think will be next?? Oh and I'm hoping to get up enough energy while watching these wonderful Opening Ceremonies to make Nanaimo bars! If not, early tomorrow;)
