Pavakka /Kaypakka Chammanthi /Bitter Gourd Chutney
Chammanthi/Chutney is a South Indian spicy side-dish and condiment served with idli, dosa and even with rice. Chammanthi/Chutney usually are moist, having a coarse to fine texture, it can be perpared either way in liquid or in solid form. The solid one is known as Chammanthi which is served with rice or kanji (rice gruel). Today I am sharing a chammanthi/chutney made with bitter gourd....Bitter gourd Chutney...huh..Pavakkakondu chammanthiyo??? Yes, sounds really interesting isn't it..I had never heard and tasted it before, till i saw this wonderful recipe form kairali sisters and followed the recipe with some minor touch, for the original recipe check here. Thanks for the wonderful recipe sujitha, it become a big hit in my family and devoured in no time. Those of you who have not tasted it, do give a try and you will be hooked :-) so this is how this simple delicious & healthy dish goes... Ingredients : Pavakka/Bitter gourd : 1/2 cup, sliced (preferably a ripe one) Grated coconut : 1 cup Shallots /Small Red Onion : 1-2 Garlic : 2 pods Tamarind : a gooseberry size or 1 tsp concentrate Dry red chilly or Green Chillies : 2-3 nos Roasted Peanut : 2 tsp (optional) Curry Leaves : few Salt as needed Oil : 1 tsp Method of Preparation : 1. Heat oil in a pan, sauté the sliced bitter gourd until light golden brown in color. 2. Add all other ingredient except tamarind and sauté for another 5-8 minutes. Remove from the fire and allow it to cool. 3. Grind this with tarmind and salt by adding very little water to a smooth paste. (Note : Chammanthi should be in solid form so do not add too much of add water) 4. Yummy Pavakka /Bitter gourd Chammanthi is ready!! Serve with chutta pappaddam, rice or kanji (rice gruel).
