Post Grape-Nuts

By Eat, Drink and Be Aware (Visit website)

Good Evening!

I hope everyone is doing well today. It seems to be all about the Fiber these days and as an Eating Coach I do seem to push fiber and protein for my clients because it fills you up and keeps you going longer.  The problem is the fiber comes in all sorts of things now and they are not all created equally.  The people at Post Cereal sent me an awesome hands-on demonstration of how there is "real" fiber-- Whole Grain Wheat, Whole Grain Wheat Flour and Wheat Bran versus "artificially" added fiber that seems to be going into just about any product these days which would be labeled Maltodextrin and Polydextrose.

One of the many tips that I am trying to teach my clients and enforce in my own household (which proves to be difficult with kids) is to eat whole foods and not processed food.  I am teaching my kids to read labels and we strive to eat things with 5 ingredients or less on packaged items and strongly encourage things with one item, such as, apple, banana, carrot.... you get the point.

I actually pulled out these little labeled containers and asked my kids which they would rather put in their bodies-- Whole Grain Wheat, Wheat Bran and Whole Grain Wheat Flour or these white powders-- Maltodextrin and Polydextrose?  Luckily, they actually said they wanted to eat the whole grains and not the white powder!  You never know with kids.

The point is that we have the power to choose what we put in our bodies and it is important to check out the labels on products.  I really think if we make baby steps towards putting less processed food in our bodies we will start feeling better and eating better overall. I am talking aloud to myself..... we still bring in way to much processed food into the house.  Cereal is a big staple in our household and I am going to make a conscious effort to make sure that we are eating cereal with naturally occurring fiber in the form of whole grain wheat, wheat bran and whole grain wheat flour.  You can find these ingredients in Post Grape-Nuts, Shredded Wheat and Raisin Bran.

It has been eons since I have had Grape-Nuts and I really enjoyed the super nutty crunch on top of my Greek Yogurt this morning.  I made a Greek Blackberry Grape-Nut Crunch Bowl.

Greek Blackberry Grape-Nut Crunch Bowl
3/4 cup Greek Yogurt
1/8 cup Post Grape-Nuts
Handful of Fresh Blackberries
1 tbsp toasted walnuts
drizzle of honey

Yum!
The best part was that my kids liked the Grape-Nuts as well.  My daughter sort of soaked hers in milk until they were a little less crunchy and ate the whole bowl and my son actually ate his as a warm cereal which is super easy to make.

Hot Grape -Nuts

1/2 cup Post Grape-Nuts
1/3 cup skim milk

Zap in the microwave for 60 seconds.  Voila- hot cereal.

Okay.... enough with the Grape-Nuts for now but I really did enjoy these this morning.  I had a busy day and got in a huge run this morning and then went to Hot Power Fusion Yoga as well as squeezed in some work and school projects as well.  Running + Yoga = Pure Joy to me.  That is my absolute favorite exercise combination.

I had a smoothie for lunch at the Java Dive Cafe called Heath by Chocolate and it literally is to die for.  I think I have written about it before but it is absolutely divine.  It is made from skim milk, mango, organic banana, almonds, chocolate, coconut and whey.

I taught yoga this afternoon and then came home and made sandwiches for dinner along with fresh strawberries that my daughter picked on her field trip to Sweet Berry Farms.

Simple but Delicious.

Turkey, Cucumber and Laughing Cow Sandwich

1 Oroweat Multigrain Sandwich Thin
2 slices roasted deli turkey
5 cucumber slices
handful of spinach
handful of matchstick carrots
1 Laughing Cow Cheese

It is time for me to get these kiddos off to bed.  I will leave you or I should say my sister with a picture of my daughter Zoe in her dance costume.  It was dress rehearsal today and she got to wear her whole get up along with MAKE-UP!  Very exciting.  My sister and I have been getting a hoot out of some of the costumes that they put these kids in for the dance recitals.  What do you think about Zoe's?
