Rabanadas de vinho - Portuguese Christmas Wine French Toasts

By FoodIdeas - Try it, you'll like it! (Visit website)

Another typical Portuguese dessert for Christmas time and one my husband absolutely loves. The best way to describe them is imagine eating French toast with wine flavor, or if you want, drunken French toasts!

INGREDIENTS3/4 bottle of red wine

3/4 bottle of Port wine

2 cups of sugar

lemon zest from a whole lemon

2 cinnamon sticks

6 eggs

1 french baguette - a day or two old

Mixture of sugar and cinnamon

Oil to fry the bread

DIRECTIONSPut the wines, sugar, lemon zest and cinnamon sticks in a pot and let it simmer for about 30 minutes.
Cut the bread into 3/4 inch slices
Beat the eggs in a bowl
Pour the wine mixture into another bowl
Soak the slices of bread in the wine syrup then pass them through the eggs and fry them in a frying pan a few at the time
Place them in a deep glass container and sprinkle the sugar cinnamon over them
Repeat until no more bread slices
