Slime!

By "The Claytons Blog" (Visit website)

This is NOT a food recipe. This is something we did just for fun because it's school holidays. We've never made slime before, and there are various recipes for slime online so I wasn't sure which was the one to go with. We ended up with our own combination of ingredients in part due to necessity. We didn't have a huge amount of the glue required to make Slime so adjusted another recipe in the hopes it would work. Having nothing to compare it with, I can only say the children were thrilled with the results.

This is fun, reasonably UN-messy and once made the product can keep for a few weeks. The bonus of course is that it's not just the making but the subsequent play that makes this activity pretty good value.

Word of warning. If you don't want your children to end up as colourful as a rainbow, don't let THEM add the food colouring - it didn't bother me, all the more fun if you ask me, after all they are not ingesting it. And a word on that. This, as I mentioned is not food, it's not good to eat, it's not good for you.

Here is our recipe:

Slime

The children each wanted their own colour, so we made two smaller batches each as follows

100ml PVA glue
100ml water
food dye (optional)
1 tsp borax
1/4 cup hot water
snap lock bag (optional, you can do this in a bowl, I just thought this was a little easier with children)

Step 1

Pour the water and glue into a snap lock bag. Seal the bag and squish together. At this point add the colouring if you're using it.

Step 2

Stir the borax into the hot water and stir together until dissolved.

Step 3

Add the dissolved borax and water into the colourful goo. It will instantly start to seize. Seal the bag again and smoosh together until it's all combined.

Once it's all combined you can tip the Slime out of the bag and play with it. Texturally the one we made holds together enough for the children to make shapes a little like slippery, shiny dough. Perhaps this is not genuine Slime, but I don't hear any complaints.
It's oozy and glurpy and to the children's delight can make some rather inappropriate noises when air is squeezed out of it. 'Slime burps' they're called.

Store the Slime in an airtight bag, it is, apparently at risk of both drying out or turning mouldy. Keep it away from carpets.
That's it. A 'recipe' I am more than happy to say is inedible.
