So Many Restaurants, So Little Time

By Food and Fond Memories (Visit website)

Today the weather is really miserable.  It's not too cold but it is very rainy.  We were really glad that we had planned to go to the World War II Museum where we would be spending hours indoors.  First we toured the walk through exhibit which was so interesting and very well done.  It covered the years from the 1930's until the end of the war.  We discovered that the reason they chose New Orleans for the site of this memorial was that Andrew Higgins, who designed and built the LCVP's the America used to land on Normandy, was from here.  Without those boats the war would have taken a entirely different turn!

Then we went to have lunch at another one of John Besh's restaurants The American Sector.  We felt we had stepped back in time to the 1940's the way the hostesses and servers were dressed but the food presentation had a mix of ultra modern and 40's vibe.  Sandwiches were served on small thick wood cutting boards and French Fries in brown paper lined tin cans.  Steve and I ordered Onion Rings to start which came stacked on a post with a spicy creamy dipping sauce.  They were totally crunchy and delicious.  Then we both had the Crab Ravigote with Greens, Tempura Fried Avocado Slices and Crispy Applewood Smoked Bacon.  The portions weren't large but absolutely yummy.  Of course this left us room for dessert so we ordered the Hot Apple Turnover with Currants and Caramel Pecan Ice Cream.  It had to be the most delicious Apple Turnover I have ever tasted.

As soon as we get home I have to go to Barnes and Noble to buy John Besh's new cookbook!  After lunch we went to see a film at the museum called Beyond All Boundries narrated by Tom Hanks in 4-D.  It was totally amazing.  The film took five years to create with so many stars doing the voices of WWII personnel including Gary Sinese, Blythe Danner, Toby Maguire, Kevin Bacon and Brad Pitt.  Our timing was really good because at 5PM it stopped raining just long enough for us to get to our car.  It rained all the way back letting up to a drizzle when we got back to the RV and then pouring ever since.  I hope it stops long enough for our drive back to the Quarter for our dinner at one of our favorite places, Susan Spicer's Bayona.
