“Spiderman, Spiderman, Does whatever a spider can

Spins a web, any size, Catches thieves just like flies

Look Out! Here comes the Spiderman.”

For most of the week, two weeks ago, I was humming the Spiderman theme, in my head and out loud.  I’m still humming as I type this entry.  Hopefully, by the time I’m done, I’ll be free of the Spiderman Theme last song syndrome (LSS). *cross fingers*

A friend requested that I make the cake for her son’s first birthday.  During our initial email exchanges, there was really no party theme yet.  When I asked her what her son is particularly fond of these days, my friend said blocks, circles and Spiderman.  Oooh, Spiderman sounded exciting!  So I very subtly suggested that we go for a Spiderman theme.

Please don’t tell me you mistook those two structures behind Spiderman for rocketships!  This cake was for a Sunday morning party and I worked on the buildings, all of them, the Thursday before the party.  They were all cut out of fondant.  I had to make a template for the two buildings on the top tier, and that one building on the bottom tier.  I hope you recognize which buildings these fondant silhouettes represent. *wink*

After cutting out the buildings, I left them on 2 trays sprinkled with cornstarch and allowed them to dry, that is, I forgot all about them until it was time to attach them to the cake.  I had to giggle when my daughter saw the trays of buildings and exclaimed, “Wow, Mommy!  It looks like a city!”  I told her it’s supposed to look like a place called Manhattan. Hee hee.

This was a fairly easy 2-tiered cake to make because for one, the buildings are not to scale anyway (sorry to disappoint my architect friends!).  Two, Spiderman was not molded out of fondant.  So I took the easy way out and used a Spiderman candle!  Nobody complained!  Mind you, it’s a $3.99 candle! Hee hee.  I just encountered a teeny weeny bit of problem covering the cakes with fondant.  But I shall spare you the details.

I had so much fun piping  spider webs on the cake!  Initially, before I piped the spider webs on the cake, I was worried that the cake looked like a Wonder Woman cake.  For a while, it really did!  Imagine it without the spiderwebs and just the red and blue cakes with the yellow stars and you’ll see what I mean.  Not good for a cake that should be oozing with testosterone…well, maybe just a little bit! In the end, everything came together just as I had imagined, if not better!

The top tier was a 6″ round  Hershey’s Perfectly Chocolate Chocolate Cake with Hershey’s Perfectly Chocolate Chocolate filling.  The bottom tier was a 10″ Vanilla Chiffon Layer Cake with Italian Meringue Buttercream filling.  It’s funny how after the birthday candle was blown, the kids immediately went for the buildings and started munching on them.  So cute!

I can be stubborn in that a lot of times, I don’t even bother to make a sketch for my cakes.  It’s like going to battle without ammunition.  For this cake and the Princess Cake just one entry down, I actually made a sketch for each.  They really did help…a lot!  Here, take a look and compare the sketch with the final product…

I was trying to copy the font for Spiderman logo.  I opted to use my letter cutters instead. :)

Here’s the sketch for the princess cake…

And that’s all the cake entries I’m posting this week.  Next week, I’ll have some new ones to share. ;)

Cheers, y’all!
