Sporting Scene

By Vintage Cookbooks & Crafts (Visit website)

I recently found this volume from the Southern Heritage set - Sporting Scene, used on Amazon. My set is now complete. This one is filled with menus and recipes for 'sporting' occasions. Lots of hunting parties here, but at the end, some football ones. What better day than today to highlight these? I do like football, having gone to a Big Ten College, and I enjoy making treats for Superbowl Sunday - usually. Yesterday we had a big family party, and this year fare will be simpler as we recover. The party was fun, but I feel like we've all played a big game here already.
The menu for "Football Tailgate Picnic": Spicy-chicken nuggets, Bacon-horseradish dip, Vegetables vinaigrette, Hearty rolls with assorted meats and cheeses, Lemon sheet cake, Fudge pie and Chilled colas. Most of that sounds good.
Especially the Fudge Pie:
1 cup sugar 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup butter or margarine, melted
1/2 cup cocoa
3/4 cup water
2 eggs
Toasted pecan halves
Combine sugar and flour in a large mixing bowl, stirring well. Stir in melted butter. Combine cocoa, water, and eggs, beat well. Pour into sugar mixture, stirring well. Pour mixture into a buttered 9-inch pie plate. Bake at 350F for 35 minutes or until set. Garnish pie with pecan halves. Cool completely and slice. Yield: one 9-inch pie.
If you are going to a party today or are making unusual treats for the Superbowl viewing, please feel free to send me a picture and ingredients to amyalessio@sbcglobal.net.
I heard on the news this morning that today is the #2 eating day after Thanksgiving. Really? Just from viewing several physically fit gentlemen playing a game? Interesting.
