Sweet Potato Puzhukku.......Thrikarthika Special

By ! Recipes @ Panchamrutham (Visit website)

Sweet Potato puzhukku
Yesterday was Thrikarthika, the extension of Diwali festival for Kerala...It falls on the full moon day of 'Karthika' nakshathram [star] in the malaylam month of Vrishchikam[ Nov- Dec]......We used to decorate our houses with rows of lamps for this festival....It was a very pleasant evening yesterday with the full moon showering its cool light in accompaniment with the candle lights at our home....

It is really interesting to watch the way our festivals are arranged...If you observe you can understand that they are all in accordance with the various seasonal changes in mother nature...and with the various positioning of Sun and moon...And to accompany each occasion we have some special recipes too....

When it comes to Thrikarthika, it is the special Puzhukku [which amma used to prepare] that  comes to mind first...It is a simple Kerala prepartion with root vegetables like Tapioca or Taro....I didnt have either of them at home yesterday and so I decided to try it with sweet potatoes which I had to finish before my upcoming Kerala trip...

The combination of sweet potato and chille was perfect and we all enjoyed the dish while having our dinner outdoors with the company of full moon...

Here is the simple recipe for you to try out sometime...You can replace Sweet Potato with Taro or Tapioca also....

Ingredients
Sweet Potato                 - 2 Nos [ Had almost 2 cups after cubing them]
Grated Coconut            - 2 Tbps
Green chillie                 - 1 large
Cumin seeds                 - 1 tsp
Turmeric powder        - 1/4 tsp
Salt                                - 3/4 tsp
for seasoning on top   [ I skipped this]
Oil                                 - 1 tsp
Mustard seeds            - 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves               - 1 petal

Preparation
Peel and wash the sweet potatoes. Cut them into small cubes and cook them with 1/2 cup of water in a pan.
Dry grind ingredients 2-4 in a mixer and keep.
Once the potatoes are 3/4th cooked, add salt and turmeric powder along with the ground coconut mix.
Mix it well and allow to cook for another 2 mins.
For seasoning, take a small pan and add oil. Once hot, allow the mustared seeds to sputter and then add the curry leaves. Top this over the prepared puzhukku and serve hot.

Hope You all had a Wonderful Weekend........

Enjoy...
