SXSW Family Eats

By The Kid Can Cook (Visit website)

SXSW - Are You Hungry Yet?

Starting today, hordes of music, film and interactive enthusiasts and professionals are descending on our new hometown, Austin, for the annual mega-event - SXSW (South by Southwest, in case you haven't heard of it before but well, if you haven't heard of it, what rock have you been living under anyway?). Running from March 11 through March 20, SXSW brings it all together in the form of multi-venue music events, film screenings and technology conferences. There's even a food blogger gathering sponsored by Whole Foods and BakeSpace.com - TECHMunch - that happens over the weekend (the Kid and I aren't going this year - maybe next year?)
With so many people flying in from all over the world for the SXSW mayhem, it makes for a lot of hungry out-of-towners, if you ask me. So I got to thinking, if I were here in the greatest city in the greatest state in the United States (we Texans are not know for our humility, you know) where would I want to take my kids to eat?
So for all you SXSW-ers with tots in tow (or anyone else planning a visit to our fair city) here's my top picks for family-friendly eats in Austin, Texas. Where there is only one location, I've listed it - otherwise, click on the link to see where you can find the one closest to your SXSW venue.

1.  Phil's Ice House (the South Lamar location shares space with an Amy's Ice Cream - bonus!)
2.  Waterloo Ice House (the location at Southpark Meadows is adjacent to a pretty awesome play scape AND another Amy's Ice Cream)
3.  Our (in)Famous Trailer Park Eateries - E.A.T. and South Austin Trailer Park and Eatery (you'll find two of our favorites here: Holy Cacao and Torchy's Tacos)
4.  Kerbey Lane Cafe
5.  Maudie's Tex-Mex

Good Food to Go (in case you don't want to "set a spell")
1.  Austin's Pizza
2.  Whataburger
3.  P. Terry's Burger Stands
4.  The Soup Peddler/ Juice Box (Building A, 2801 South Lamar Blvd., Austin, TX 78704, (512) 444-7687)
5.  Steak and Shake (9300 S I-35, Austin, TX 78748, (512) 291-8095) - Open 24 hours with "happy hours" for 1/2 price drinks and shakes from 2 - 4 pm AND am
