The Secret to Success is Support
I’m really not much of a joiner. I don’t do well in that kind of situation. I lose interest in following the crowd pretty quickly and then part of the group resents me for not participating the way the believe I should, or I resent the group for inundating me with requests to do things, go places, etc. So, I usually resist internet groups and participation situations like the plague. Until… A couple of months ago some of the people that I follow on twitter were talking about going through ProBlogger’s 31 Days to a Better Blog and since I had been meaning to go through it myself, I thought it might help with accountability to temporarily join a group for it. In the end it was a great experience (and if you’ve never done it, I suggest you do), but my favorite part was that all these bright, cool women were so helpful and open about their experiences and it made the experience that much more enjoyable. I picked up a couple of great new reads, some cool tweeps to follow, a facebook friend or two and even a new buddy. And then it was over and I had other things to do and be and make and I sort of slipped away from the community – although I did check in occasionally, comment here and there and I continued to visit the blogs I had found. The other day I went back and they’re doing something really useful and fun. They created “tribes”; groups of blogs, connected by type. Food blogs, technology blogs, mom blogs, etc… And while I missed the scheduled activities, it was very easy to join a tribe or three and just jump in and start connecting. While there are lots of groups out there for bloggers, I really like the diversity that SITS has. I’m a mom and I’m a blogger, but I’m not necessarily a mommy blogger. My children are older and I have more time now to explore the things that I like to do – I’ve found that a lot of communities really focus on the mom with small children and SITS is very diverse as well as open and inclusive and just… well, friendly. I’ve added the site to my “morning coffee” and every day I go read and comment on the featured blogger, check in with my tribes, and then I visit a random blog and read and comment on one of their posts. It doesn’t take long and I’m finding some great new reads and picking up a bit of traffic too. Give it a shot, I think you might find it useful too. If you join, look me up!
