The Universe: Our Solar System Review & Giveaway (Canada Only) 10/6
Have you ever stared up into the dark night sky and wondered what is really out there? I must admit that before now my mind and thoughts were very narrow when it came to our Universe. There are stars, a moon and somewhere else there are more planets. Mars is red and Saturn has rings. That was about the extent of it. I was recently given the opportunity to review a brand-new release from A & E Home Entertainment. The Universe: Our Solar System is a fascinating two-disc Blu ray adventure that takes you up, out and beyond. Never before have I witnessed anything more beautiful and truly intriguing. The Universe: Our Solar System is divided up into ten individual episodes. Each one is more amazing than the last. There are a full seven hours and fifty minutes of adventure.
The first episode is the “secret of the sun.” You will learn how the sun was born, and quickly understand in detail how the sun actually works. It answers the questions as to the sun?s size, it?s mass and what is really going on in there to produce all that heat. It is not only very informative it breaks the information down. They simulate ideas and facts to everyday items and this makes it very easy to grasp the concepts they are trying to explain. You will learn interesting facts like that the sun is about three billion years old. The earth is about 93 million miles away from the sun. What is nuclear fusion, solar flares and even when and how the sun will eventually die? There is an enormous amount of information, but it is explained in a very creative and visually pleasing manner. The graphics and special effects make it a joy to watch. All the way through the first episode my husband and I kept looking at one another and saying. ” Did you know that?” “That is so cool!” My first thought after watching the first episode was “wow” I had no idea all that was going on up there”. My second thought was “this should be in every single school and in every single classroom.” The next episode is called Mars: The Red Planet. Like the episode before this is truly a joy to watch. I was so captured by the way they explain things I didn?t even want to get up and get a drink of water for fear of missing something really great. You will learn why Mars is called the “Red Planet.” As you take a virtual tour of this planet which is 34 million miles from earth you will learn lots of interesting facts. That it can be one hundred degrees below zero at night. It is cold and dry and there is absolutely no oxygen. It is the fourth planet from the sun and is about half the size of our earth. You will also learn about Super Novas and the beginning of our solar system. This is just a fraction of what you will learn along your voyage. The third episode is called The End of the Earth: Deep Space Threats to our Planet. In this episode you will learn about asteroids and their impact on our earth. You will find out that there are eight hundred and fifty NEO?S (near earth objects) in our atmosphere and how they are closely tracked and monitored. You get an inside view of the scientists and their work. This is not a documentary where there is a cover voice talking all the way through. You actually meet the people that do this research for a living. They explain what we know to date and what is the next step in finding out more. In the episodes that followed, I become totally absorbed. Each one is a new voyage. Everything is so beautifully done. You will see actual footage from the Hubble telescope. See meteors that they have found. Incredible close up photographs like you have never seen before. Learn about each planet, their size, mass, gravity and atmosphere or in many cases the lack of. Gain the knowledge of what a Gamma Ray Burst is and how it could be the end of our earth as we know it. Find out how earth has survived 45 million years and explores different scenarios of how it might all end. Will it be a massive solar storm? Will the sun just burn out? Could we be hit by a 750 ft in diameter asteroid call Athothis? Is there anywhere else we can go? Is there a planet out there in our Universe that is suitable for life? All this and much more is part of the incredible adventure called The Universe: Our Solar System.
It really does make you feel so small once you have seen what else is out there. Explore the stars, the moons, the other galaxies. Fascinating visuals of Saturn?s seven rings. It really is a must see for everyone. It is so intriguing that if I had seen this as a child or young teen I might have considered a career along a scientific path. Who knows I might have become an astro physicist or specialized in thermal nuclear fusion. I had no idea that we knew so much and had gathered so much information about the universe and our solar system. I always wondered why so much money was spent on space programs. I will never doubt or question their cause again. It is invaluable information that could some day, billions of years in the future save the human race and prevent us from being extinct like the dinosaurs before us. I encourage everyone young and old to check out A & E Home Entertainment new two disc Blu ray The Universe: Our Solar System. You will never look at the song “Twinkle, twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are?” in the same way. You will no longer wonder you will know.
