Totally Awesome Oregon Farmers Markets: Portland!
When my roommate Heather beckoned me to our local farmers market, I had ho-hum visions of standardized looking fruits and vegetables (a Southern California tomato farmer once told me most of the stuff at the farmers market comes from corporate farms which are brokered off and not really that organic). Of course you can't believe everything people tell you, but I've since grown skeptical of farmers markets, especially the downtown Los Angeles ones. Santa Monica farmers market is in its own category, so it doesn't count :) That being said, these Portland farmers markets are the real deal, even a stand for "community gardens" where I bought a large zucchini from one of my "neighbors" for $1. Another highlight is a knife sharpening stand.
A cool sighting for a Californian. Kohrabi No joke! Oregon blackberries! Awesome cheese from Black Sheep Creamery in Chehalis, Washington. Amazing Queso de Oveja. I bought some of the Mystery. Good stuff! Lemon Cucumbers That's a freshly sharpened machete sitting on the counter. Huge garlic. WTF. Sellwood and Lents Farmers Markets in Southeast Portland
