Un Burro Grande

By What's For Dinner? (Visit website)

Ever since I started working at my current school district 3 years ago, all 6 Spanish teachers in the district have a fun little tradition: we go to the neighborhood Mexican place, order burritos and enchiladas, eat chips and salsa, and DON’T talk about work. Tonight was the night we decided to meet up, so my dinner was NOT cooked by me… but oh. so. delicious.

I may have had a few of these (not bad for a phone picture, huh?):

And thanks to an earlier conversation with Adam, as well as Meghann’s post yesterday, all I wanted was a burrito. So a burrito I got… wait. Rewind.

*And now a brief Spanish lesson from your friendly resident Spanish teacher*

The suffix -ito on the end of a Spanish noun indicates that the noun is, indeed, small. A few examples:

a cat is a gato. A small cat is a gatito.
A dog is a perro. A small dog is a perrito.
A donkey is a burro. A small donkey rolled up sandwich is a burrito.

Actually, a small donkey IS a burrito, but that’s not why a burrito is called a burrito. A burrito is a burrito (how many times can I write burrito?) because gauchos (cowboys, not the pants) needed a way to eat meals while riding on their (wait for it) burros, so they rolled up meat, rice, and veggies into larger than normal tortillas, and ate them on the go.

Alright class, you may pack up your books and go. ¡Adiós!

NO NO! Not really! I’m not done! Our neighborhood place does not call their burritos as such. They call them Burros. As in “not small”. I did a smart thing and got the whole wheat wrap as well as light cheese in this delicious beef and bean burrito:

I ate the WHOLE thing. And it was delicious!

After some more chit-chat, some congratulatory engagement hugs to one of the other teachers, and a few extra chips, we headed on our way. By the time I got home, I was ready for some more of my food discovery from yesterday: Stone Ridge Creamery TART yogurt.

Let’s rewind again (the way-back machine is getting lots of work today, huh?). When I was younger and the frozen yogurt craze first started, we LOVED the non-fat-no-sugar flavored yogurts a-la TCBY, Love’s, Freshëns, etc. The one complaint my mom and I always had was that frozen yogurt never tasted like yogurt. Then came Red Mango, Yogen Früz, and Pinkberry…which tasted like yogurt but were quite pricey. And then came TART yogurt from the Stone Ridge Creamery and my local grocery store.

It’s absolutely FANTASTIC! It tastes like peaches (I got the peach flavor), it’s tart like yogurt, it has 100 calories per serving, and is $2.99 for a QUART! I stylized mine up with some semi-sweet chocolate chips:

I’m enjoying this while writing… so far, no grading to be brought home! I’ve kept on top of my piles of papers during my plan periods! HOORAY for time management!

On another note, I’m going to be traveling to Utica, New York for a friend’s wedding this weekend, and will have some significant down time Sunday morning/early afternoon. Are there any bloggers/readers who would like to meet up? Let me know!

Happy almost Wednesday, all! OH! And a huge ¡HOLA! Goes out to my Spanish Teacher colleagues who all got my blog business card tonight!
