What's for breakfast? Cereal?
Most people don't think twice about what type of cereal they choose to have in the morning, but for someone on a gluten-free diet, it becomes tedious standing in a store isle, reading ingredients and hoping that the box has 'gluten free' on it somewhere.
On Dec. 22, 2010, Post Food, LLC announced that Fruity and Cocoa Pebbles Cereal will be designated Gluten-Free beginning Jan. 2011. This is definitely a step in the right direction and a staple in history for other cereal manufacturers to follow. Along with being gluten-free, the company is decreasing the sugar content and improving the nutrition of the cereal. But Post Food LLC is not the first in the line of gluten-free cereals. There are numerous choices on the market. General Mills has been offering gluten-free boxed cereals for quite some time now. Rice, Corn, Honey Nut, Chocolate and Cinnamon Chex Cereals are all gluten-free and are not only used as cereal, but their web site also offers great snack recipes. They also have Trix, Mickey Berry Crunch, and Cocoa Puffs in their gluten-free section. Other companies that offer cold breakfast cereals are: Kay's NaturalsGlutino Cereals Enjoy Life Foods Erewhon Nature's Path Bakery on Main Cerealvit Companies that offer hot breakfast cereals: Bob's Red MillCream Hill Estates Gluten Freeda I have not tried all of these cereals, but have tried several. Of course, like anyone else, my daughter has her favorites. It was nice to have the Chex web site present wonderful recipes for alternatives to Halloween candy. There were so many recipes that we tried this Halloween and all of them tasted terrific! All of the kids loved them. I'm sure there may be a cereal company that I have missed in doing my research, so if I have, and there is a cereal that you use, please share about it in the comments.
