Wokcano

Hello, my friends!  I hope you are all having a wonderful weekend full of lot's of food and fun (fun food)!!

Yesterday, my sweetheart took me to a new restaurant here in Long Beach called Wokcano Sushi Bar.  In fact, it's right down the street from where we live on The Promenade.  The Promenade is currently considered the cool place to be in our city.  It's where all the hip and happening people (like me... lol) go when we feel like spending way too much money on food and drink.  Seriously... $11 for their signature drinks!  My husband and I didn't order any drinks though.  Instead, we ordered a cup of hot tea and water.

I didn't have my camera along, so all of the photos were taken with my phone.  I apologize for the poor quality.

The outside sign...

Prashant, my sweet husband, who took me out for dinner so I wouldn't have to wash dishes!

Some pictures of the decor...

All of the windows were slatted with wood...

A really nice sushi bar...

Table ambiance...

Our place settings...

Our tea came with Sugar for the Soul packets.  Each packet came with a saying on the back-- my camera wasn't able to zoom in on the saying though...

A huge mug of green tea...

We ordered 2 appetizers... these are the onion pancakes.  The pancakes were only so-so.  There were onions on top but not inside and the plum dipping sauce was from a jar.  When we pay a lot of money to eat out at a fancy place, we expect to have better quality condiments.  I wouldn't order this again.

Our $5 egg rolls ($2.50 a piece)!  We usually pay $6 for 4 egg rolls at other restaurants, so I consider these to be expensive.  These were the worst egg rolls I've ever tasted... the filling was so mushy that I thought I was eating potatoes instead of cabbage.  Again, the sauce was pre-made from a jar.  Yuck.

My plate...

For dinner we ordered tofu family style with vegetables in a spicy sauce (which wasn't spicy) and curry flavored thin rice noodles to go with it.  The noodles were bland if eaten alone, so my husband and I ladled on spoonfuls of the sauce from our tofu entree to make it better.  It helped a little, but not much.  The tofu dish was only so-so also.

Our overall impression of Wokcano... a beautiful place to go for drinks and socialize with friends, but not the greatest for good quality food.  To be fair, their other menu selections may be much better than what we had, however, we will never know because we've decided that we won't be going back.  Plus, the selections offered for vegetarians are limited, so we did our best with what we had to choose from.

I also felt like I had a lead weight in my tummy after eating this food.  I prefer Asian food that is light and not full of oil-- just by cutting back on the oil and adding a splash of sesame oil or other simple ingredients could make their food much better.

My husband said that he would like a do-over... he's going to take me to an Indian restaurant in Artesia (Little India) called Rajdhani.  It's a full service restaurant where they never let your glass or your plate go empty and at the end of the meal, they bring a pot of hot water for you to wash your hands with (because traditionally Indians eat with their hands).  I'm excited to try it... my husband went there earlier this week with some family who were down here to visit his father in the hospital.  He said it was good... it doesn't sound like the healthiest food though. I'll see-- I'll just try a little of everything as to not overdo it.

I'll be back tomorrow with pictures of our food adventures from today!  Have fun!!
