Yerba Mate

By Fiq Food (Visit website)

I was turned on to this stuff in Argentina. In Argentina, Uruguay, and part of Brazil they drink yerba mate as we would coffee or tea. Relaxing in the sun outside a rock climbing refuge called Frey, near Bariloche, Argentina was the first time I tried it. In the middle of my relaxation this obnoxious Canadian climber offered us some. Now I'm no sissy when it come to herbal drinks, I take my tea strong sin sugar, but wow was it bitter and strong. It was like drinking a hot grass smoothy...not good. It really irritated me that I didn't like it, locals drank 2 liters a day easy. So I tried it again and again and like not liking beer or coffee the first time, I slowly feel in love. I also learned a bit about yerba mate and the proper way to brew and drink it. Yerba mate is a type of holly, shrub plant, native to subtropical South America, Argentina, Chile, Southern Paraguay and Brazil, and Uruguay.
The leaves and twigs are dried and packed about half way into a mate cup made out of a variety of materials. Here I've got a metal warped wooden mate.
The key in preparing the perfect mate is using hot water not boiling water water. I'm pretty sure the obnoxious Canadian used boiling water, hence the extremely strong bitter flavor. After pouring in the hot water it's sipped through a metal straw. Unlike tea, the leaves can be steeped several times so hot water is continually added while sharing. Yerba Mate has a little less caffeine than tea so you can drink quite a bit of it without feeling like your heart's about to explode. It's a great alternative to tea or coffee and I'm a big fan!
