Igloo Cafe
I seem to gravitate towards sandwich shops. Maybe its in my genes. Or maybe some of these places are just so good, you just have to keep going back. Today I will bring you to Astoria, Queens and go into the restaurant simply named Igloo Cafe. Located right off the subway from the very end of the N and W line, lies this dandy of a sandwich shop. But, its not just the sandwiches that make this place a gem, they also have fresh baked pastries, a variety of awesome tasting ice cream, and a great breakfast menu as well. I've tried all of their different types of sandwiches from paninis, wraps, burgers, and rolls and every single one has been terrific. One of the unique ones that stands out is the Chicken Pesto Panini. It has grilled chicken, fresh mozzarella, sundried tomato, mesclun greens, and best of all, homemade pesto. And boy does it really taste homemade. MMM MMM. As for the wraps you are bound to find one that truly suits you as there are 19 different choices. My personal favorite is the Sante Fe Wrap which is filled with grilled chicken, cheddar cheese, red onion, tomato, and guacamole in a sundried tomato wrap. Oh yeah, did I mention they have all kinds of different tortillas wraps to choose from too? Oh yes, yes they do. I wanted to try something that I never had at Igloo on the last trip I took. As a matter of fact, it was a food I've never tried anywhere in my life. The result was Corn Nuggets. These appetizer doozies are golden brown nuggets with a creamy corn filling and served with ranch dipping sauce. Sounds so simple, but Igloo had prepared it to be so sweet and perfectly cripsy. I loved them! I had touched on the desserts of Igloo. I have a few of them such as the Chocolate Mousse Cake, Tiramisu, and the Chocolate Covered Oreo Cheesecake, and everyone one was been soooo creamy, soooo delicious. Everyone is an awesome choice. You may be saying to yourself that the items on this menu doesn't really stand out as being different from any other restaurant, but you've got to understand the quality here. Igloo really puts care and love into every item on their menu. Every burger, ice cream cone, muffin, salad, bacon, belgian waffle, portobello wrap, french fry is made with such an amazingly consistent quality. And that is what is special about Igloo. Oh yeah, and about those fries, always upgrade to waffle fries!Igloo 22-26 31st Street Astoria, NY 11105 (718) 726-7700 Prices: Chicken Pesto Panini $7.95, Santa Fe Wrap $7.45, Chocolate Mousse Cake $3.95 Hours: Mon-Sat 7am-11:30pm, Sun 7am-11pm
