Buying Nuts for Christmas? Think Ontario Nuts!
Nuts are a popular snack around the holidays! They're used for baking (i.e, fudge, caramel corn, etc..), as decorations, roasted, mixed as a snack and in gift baskets.
Unfortunately most of the nuts purchased from Wal-Mart or at a grocery store typically come from the U.S. or other foreign countries. Chestnuts, for instance, are brought in from Italy. I am sure that most people don't realize that there is, in fact, a chestnut grower near London. There is...in Kerwood, Ontario. He was at the oudoor Covent Garden Farmer's market in the Fall - Keyser Nut Grove. Although he is not there any longer the chestnuts are available inside the market and also at the Western Fair Market. I've always wanted to buy some but don't have any idea what to do with them. I know they can be roasted, obviously, but I've never done it. I'll have to do some research! Another Ontario nut is the peanut. There are a couple of peanut growers - Kernal Peanuts located in Vittoria, Ontario (Norfolk Road 58 - (http://www.canadianpeanuts.com/)Picard's Peanuts located in Lasalette, Ontario and processed in Waterford, Ontario (http://www.picardspeanuts.ca/) I've mentioned Picard's on here before (see March 2010) but thought they needed another mention for the prime peanut-eating season! On Saturday I visited their retail store in Woodstock, Ontario to purchase a couple of Christmas gifts. Since I follow them on Twitter (@OntPeanuts) I knew that they had a variety of gift baskets available for gifts. They had a lot of those that's foresure! Lots of selection to choose from! They also have many gift boxes as well. I bought two small boxes at $13.95 and a medium-sized box at $17.95. The larger-sized boxes were also very well priced. Based on the price I was impressed by the variety of product included within the boxes. There was a lot of value for the prices that I paid. While I was there I also bought some peanuts to plant in the Spring. Only $0.95 for the pack I believe. It'll be fun to eat our own fresh peanuts next year! So...I guess the point of my post is to tell you to bypass the department/grocery stores this Christmas and make a stop at Picards! They have locations in St. Jacob's, Talbotville, Windham, Fonthill, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Morriston, Waterdown and Woodstock. Top things to buy there for the holidays: Ontario peanuts to snack on (many flavors available)Ontario peanut butter (to make yummy peanut butter balls)chipnuts for your family gatherings (jumbo cocktail peanut covered in a crispy shell--like a chip--available in 16 flavours)gift baskets and boxed gift sets for the hard-to-buy people on your listNow...if only they'd open a store in London!! (wink, wink!) I'd be there all the time! related searches : Buying
