Orientalism and Egyptian Influences on American Architecture
Many people consider Greek and Roman architecture to be the foundation of "Western" design. But what people don't realize is that many motifs which we associate with Greece and Rome were actually adapted or influenced by ancient Egypt. Today I gave a lecture at the residence of the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Mr. Sameh Shoukry. Last year, his wife Suzy and I decided that this would be a great topic to discuss with the ladies from The Hospitality and Information Services for Diplomats organization.
I reviewed how Egyptian architecture influenced Greco-Roman design, which in turn was a major force of inspiration for American architects and presidents alike. The reflecting pool and the Washington Monument on the Mall are, for example, very similar to the pool and obelisk at the Temple of Karnak in Luxor. Many great capitols like Rome, Paris, and Washington are sprinkled with Egyptian and Egyptian Revival motifs. Afterwards, Mrs. Shoukry treated everyone to a lovely buffet complete with chocolate pyramids, date cakes, phyllo purses, mini shwarma sandwiches, chocolate - covered strawberries, and more.
