Simply Armenian ? Book Review

By A Self-Confessed Foodie (Visit website)

I?ve tried many different world cuisines but I?ve never had Armenian food.  When I had the opportunity to request a copy of Simply Armenian: Naturally Healthy Ethnic Cooking Made Easy, written by Barbara Ghazarian and published by Publishing Works, Inc., I jumped at it.image

Truth be told, I had no idea what to expect!  I was pleasantly surprised by the book I received!  It contains over 150 recipes considered classics in Armenia.  The recipes range from simple to special occasion and most use ingredients readily available in your local grocery store.

Armenian food closely resembles Greek food, in fact some dishes are classics in both cultures.  It relies on lamb as the primary meat (but more than half of the dishes are vegetarian) and has a strong focus on ingredients such as oregano, feta, vegetables and olive oil.  I love that the book also includes recipes for a variety of breads and desserts ? not recipes I?ll make on a regular basis but unique things to try!

Simply Armenian: Naturally Healthy Ethnic Cooking Made Easy is well-written with clear instructions.  The book tries to be ?neighborly?, not at all pretentious.  The recipes are accessible and easy to follow, no matter how much culinary experience you have.  The book?s major downfall, however, is the lack of photographs.  Having pictures of the dishes would make me even more likely to want to try them!

Nevertheless, there are many recipes in this book I intend to make, including lamb-stuffed grape leaves, something I?ve always enjoyed eating at restaurants!

I?ve already tried the recipe for spiced feta cheese dip.  It took mere minutes to make.  It calls for you to mix feta with a little olive oil, thyme, cayenne pepper, mint, oregano and cumin.  It was spicy and full of flavor.  We ate it with pita bread.  It would also be good mixed with a little Greek yogurt to make a creamy dip for vegetables!

This is a really interesting book and would be a unique gift for any food lover!
