Under The Mango Tree (UTMT)

By Bangalore restaurants- On my plate (Visit website)

Its been a really long week - we celebrated three festivals in a row - St Mary's Feast, Ganesh Chaturthi and Eid. This meant that I spent a good part of the week in the kitchen, slogging it out to make each one special. This is my excuse for not having any activity on FB or any reviews up last week. All the cooking and eating done, here is my take on UTMT. We saw the board announcing it a couple of times when we passed by and finally decided to make a weekend lunch of it.

Dropped in and were greeted by the sweet owner Nirmala. We didn't have a reservation, but were seated immediately anyways. The restaurant has been so christened thanks to the huge mango tree at the center of the restaurant. Quite literally, all seating is arranged under it. The decor is in glass and wood with rattan back seats. The menu is not an endless one and this makes ordering all the more easier. You also know that enough of attention is paid to each of the dishes being made.

Under The Mango Tree

To begin with Sudhakar had a cranberry juice and we settled on bacon wrapped chicken and prawns in olive oil with red chillies and garlic. The main ingredients of each of the dishes is enough to get you drooling and we didn't have to wait too long for both. The prawns were decent sized and there was generous amounts of olive red chillies and garlic. Altogether a great dish, which I wish didn't get over as fast as it did.

The bacon wrapped chicken looked really delicately done. I had in mind the bacon wrapped prawns we had at Silver Wok next door. Though great in taste, they had a rather cobbled together look to them and were way bigger than bite sized. The one's at UTMT however, were done simplistically and could be eaten without looking like a baby trying to pani puri and failing. The finely cut slice of bacon ensured that the dish was not too salty.

For the main course I felt like fish and the Pan fried sea bass fillet with sun dried tomatoes, olive oil, red chillies sounded just right. I asked for mashed potatoes on the side. The 4 or 5 fish fillets had a crispness to their surface. This was topped off generously with all of the other ingredients as well as a some thinly sliced black olives. Every mouthful gave you a range of tastes - mildly spicy, tangy, a hint of sour and more. With the mashed potatoes to go along, it was a great meal.

Sudhakar had the Spaghetti with smoked bacon in cream sauce. Again, high score on taste. Junior decided to stick with her favorite french fries. And also helped polish off the blueberry cheesecake we had for dessert. It was a nice dessert with the butter biscuit base crisp enough to yield to the spoon and the cheesecake and rich and creamy.

Overall the place is definitely worth a visit and more. The ambiance is pleasant. Service is quick enough and you will spot Nirmala at every table trying to make sure everything is alright. Personally, I was reminded of the food at The Rogue Elephant. The only difference being that the quantities at Rogue ensure that it was your only meal of the day. UTMT allows you to consider another visit for the next meal of the day. The loos need a bit of sprucing up though and we had to wait a considerable while for our bill to arrive. These however are minor issues.
