Famous Seremban Favourites, Sunway Mas

By Pillow Talk with Bangsar-bAbE (Visit website)

I think char siew is one of the more decadent dishes in Chinese cuisine, especially the fatty ones. I love how the fat dissolves in the mouth, and down the throat. Since my lunch kaki(s) and I didn?t want to go all the way to Shah Alam or KL for Meng Kee Char Siew, we went to Restoran Famous Seremban Favourites in Sunway Mas. Served on top of cucumber slices and sweet sauce at the side, the char siew (RM5 per portion) had a sticky, caramelised outer layer, with slightly charred sides. Its sweet, melt-in-your-mouth texture was lip smacking, especially when eaten with the sweet sauce. The best way to enjoy Char Siew is to order it ?pun fei sau?, which means half fat, half lean. Not something you should eat if you?re watching your weight. I love the combination of melt-in-your-mouth fat and lean yet tender meat. The fat and lean parts of the pork were well balanced, and the slightly charred sides heightened our char siew experience. I contemplated buying a whole slab for myself to indulge, but since I was supposed to keep my weight in check (I will explain in the near future), I decided against it. The Hakka Mee was probably one of the simplest looking noodles I?ve eaten. We were all quite hungry, so we each got a large bowl (RM4.50). Topped with savoury minced pork and chopped spring onions, the noodles were springy and firm to the bite. I liked the ?QQ? texture of the noodles and most importantly, it did not taste or smell of alkaline water (kan sui). Although flavourful on its own, the minced pork topping did not give enough flavour to the noodles. However, this was quickly rectified with some pickled green chilli. I found the Sui Kao mediocre. It lacked crunch and the filling was not flavourful enough. The wantan fared slightly better, but it still didn?t rock my boat. Lunch came up to about RM13 per person inclusive of drinks. I reckon this is one of the best char siews I?ve tried and it?s best to come early to beat the lunch crowd.

Ambiance: 3/10
Price: 6.5/10 (non halal)
Char Siew: 7.5/10
Hakka Mee: 5/10
Sui Kow & Wantan: 3/10
Verdict: Try the char siew, and make sure you ask for ?pun fei sau?!
