Frisco Shop Tastes Like Grandma!
Okay, that was tasteless, but Frisco Shop, 6801 Burnet Rd, isn't. This is owned by the Nighthawk restaurant chain but has been around since 1953 and is definitely an Austin classic. My friend M and I are often the youngest customers, even though we're not that young. It's definitely old style southern home cooking with "kiss my grits" type waitresses to match. The food is dee-lish. I'm especially fond of the vegetable plate since I can pretend I'm being virtuous. The veggies are suprisingly not all that greasy and the two best, though not the healthiest, are the whipped sweet potatoes, rich with brown sugar and sprinkles of pecans, and the mashed potatoes, served with a delectable white gravy. Also excellent are the burgers and the grilled cheese. But what people really come to Frisco Shop for is the pies. I haven't eaten chocolate cream pie this good since the days my grandmother was alive and making it from scratch. The same can be said for the coconut pie, my favorite in town, that has a custard filling and isn't overly sweet. The only fault I've found thus far is the cheesecake, which tastes like those boxed cheesecake mixes you pour into a pie crust. Pretty bad considering the quality of the pies. My only other sadness has been that they never seem to have the lemon pie on the days I come in. Go to Frisco Shop for the sandwiches, stay for the pie. related searches : Frisco
