Michelle Obama: 'I Don't Buy A Designer, I Buy A Dress'
Fashion was on the menu at the White House lunch forreporters just recently, Politico writes: ?Clothes are just the thing that you wear to do the stuff you need todo,? first lady Michelle Obama told reporters who lunched with her at the WhiteHouse on Tuesday. The first lady ? who was wearing a Marc Jacobs dress andsilver pumps ? was, not surprisingly, asked once again about her decision towear a foreign label dress to the China state dinner in January. ?I like to patronize American designers, and the vastmajority of the clothes that I wear are [designed by Americans.] But there area lot of other designers that have cute stuff, too,? Obama said. ?I don't thinkthat I?m any different from any other woman, other than the fact that peoplesee what I wear and then they talk about it.? The first lady insisted that she often picks heroutfits with very practical reasons in mind, like the weather. ?It?s reallyjust sort of, how cold is it? Do I have to stand outside, and what am I goingto use to cover my arms if I?m freezing so I?m not shivering while I have togive a speech? It?s really stuff like that. And I know people are sort of thinkingthat it?s different, but it?s real practical stuff like that.? While stressing that her attire must be sensible andcomfortable, Obama ? whose every outfit is closely watched ? said that she?sdrawn to ?cute? clothes, too. ?I don't buy a designer, I buy a dress,? shesaid. ?I buy the thing that looks good. And then it?s like, oh, who is this?? Responding to criticism that she doesn?t always keepAmerican designers in mind when getting dressed, Obama told ?Good MorningAmerica? recently that she simply wears what she loves. And she reiterated thatsentiment on Tuesday: ?I hope that women learn to wear what they love becausethat ? I think that's one of the hardest things as women ? is that you'realways trying to catch up to somebody else?s vision of who you should be. Andthat's hard. It?s hard on us.? related searches : Michelle
