Victorian High Country- Lakes Entrance

By INDULGENCE (Visit website)

My quick retreat to a Victorian high country...
Destination: Lakes Entrance, East Gippsland, Victoria.

Day 1-

4:00: I am not an early riser at all (ask my MIL), but the excitement of holidaying kept me twisting and turning on my bed. With so much anticipation for this well deserved break and this beautiful place, I woke up slowly and peeped out of my huge windows. To my surprise this property was facing the town golf course and beyond was the astounding Bass Strait sea view...wow breathtaking.

KIick klick.....

Slowly went to the bedroom where my hubs lay tucked in the huge quilt with all that night driving....hugged him tight and said,?Thanks honey, tis place is beautiful?. Then snuggled into my kiddo?s bed and woke him up as well.....guess I wanted to spend my 4 day vacation like 4 months.

This property is located 2-3 minutes drive from the hustle bustle of the main shopping area with gorgeous fully contained 6 cottages, each unique on its own. We were at the Bass Cottage, since it was facing the Bass Strait hence the name.

6:00: Quick breakfast of eggs on toast, Choco-pops, Tea and Milo.

9:00: We were already out to explore the city. Went to the information centre, picked brochures of local restaurants and attractions around.

11:00: Started with Buchan Caves.... a beautiful cave with limestone formations discovered by Frank Moon. The cave is full of different shapes and sizes of stalactites and stalagmites. Nature couldn?t be more beautiful and enigmatic.

13:00: Ferrymans floating seafood cafe.....oh boy!!!! This is a seafood lover?s paradise with juicy prawns, bugs and fresh oysters....slurp slurp..

15:00: Next stop was paddle boating and canoeing... had to keep the junior entertained.

17:00: Retired back home for some peaceful swimming.

19:00: More fish n chips from one of the take a ways.

Day 2-

6:00: Good morning sunshine.....klick klick.

8:00: Pancakes with honey and berry jam (remember I made some last week).

10:00: It is impossible to visit Gippsland and not go fishing. We went hunting for good fishing boats (you can sail in these small fishing boats without a license), bait and all. Booked for 2 o?clock and went seafood hogging. Although I am not much of a fish n chip person but won?t deny I went crazy trying all the take a ways along the shopping precint and to my surprise they all served the freshest seafood around.

11:00 : After the very satisfying snack took a walk around the serene Esplanade and even bought some fresh prawns from the fish monger selling right from his boat.....what a sight.

14:00: Gone fishing.

15:00: Took the small hired boat and went fishing....my first fishing or rather any water sport experience since I am dead scared of the sea/water...after the horrifying hot water burns from my early childhood days.
Gathered myself and took the plunge....won't deny at every wave I skipped my heart beat and went bonkers. But then it was not that bad, I started to enjoy and all that fear just disappeared.

16:00-18:00: Everytime my rod was pulled we all yelled ..fish fish...but then bad luck only sea weeds and more seaweeds. Still we did not loose hope since our neighbour boat kept fishing huge crabs one after the other.
Fish fish.....we screamed again but this time a real fish....a sea bream....hey one more fish fish....a huge crab, both caught by my jr....he couldn?t stop jumping all over the boat. Oh what fun we had!!!

19:00: Back to the cottage to cook the bream, crab and the prawns....yum yum.

Day 3-

7:00 am: Sat by the porch sipping hot cuppa and enjoying the sunshine.

9:00 am: Breakfast of cornflakes, eggs on toast, muesli and fruits.

11:00 am: Met Robin and Jan, the wonderful host and owner of the property.

12:00 am: Went Mini golfing.....
14:00- Tried the local cafe Alma's at Payensville....no words to describe- the food was really amazing. Succulent lamb cutlets marinated with plum preserve, on a bed of creamy potatoes and preserved pears and Seafood pasta...yum yum. Although the mussel in the pasta was a bit chewy but the huge prawns made up .

16:00- After all the heavy lunch retired back to the cottage to relax in the Jacuzzi. This jacuzzi is nestled in between the property and looks like a small cottage on its own with a view of the golf course...and fully equiped with a bbq area.

19:00- A very light supper of soup, chicken and fruits.

Day 4-

Morning started with a lonely walk around the golf course while sipping my morning cuppa, enjoying the fresh gentle wind and the flawlessly maintained turf. ?Do I have to go back????? I kept asking myself. Guess the answer was ?Yes?...what else.

Lakes Entrance is a great place for the perfect relaxing weekend or a quick vacation and true to their tagline...Naturally Magic. It is full of breathtaking Alpine scenery and beautiful countryside landscape with some great food.

This charming high country is sure to take your breathe away.
