Baklava Baklava can be made a week ahead Makes: 24 pieces Time Required: 55 minutes plus baking time Ingredients 1 1/2 cups ( 300 g ) almonds, chopped 1/2 cup ( 100 g ) walnuts, chopped 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder 1/2 cup (100 g ) castor sugar 156 sheets flay pastry 200 g unsalted butter, melted 24 cloves For the syrup: 1 cup ( 200 g ) castor sugar 1/3 cup ( 80 ml ) orange juice 1/2 cup ( 120 ml ) water Combine all the ingredients in a pan, stir over low heat, without boiling, until the sugar is dissolved. Simmer, uncovered without stirring for five minutes or until slightly thickened. Method Grease a 20 cm x 30 cm pan. Combine nuts with cinnamon and sugar in a bowl. Layer four pastry sheets together, brushing each with little butter. Fold the layered sheets into half, press them into the pan. Sprinkle pastry with 1/2 of the nut mixture. Repeat the layers, finishing with a pastry layers. turn pastry edges to fit the pan. Cut the pastry in the pan itself into half lengthwise through the layers. Curt each half into three squares. Cut each square clockwise into four triangles. Stud the triangle with a clove each.
