Homemade Gluten-free Playdough

By Allergic Adventures (Visit website)

Some days having a child with allergies is slightly more challenging than others. I always prepare for our days out by making lunch and/or snacks before we leave and packing those and any drinks along with us, but sometimes you never know what will come up. Playdough, for example, was at my mother-in-laws yesterday. My niece loves playing with it and she was eager to bring it out. I asked her if we could wait until after we left and she kindly put it away. Considering she's only 2-1/2, I was grateful it was that easy. However, it snuck its way back out shortly after, so I needed to do what I've become quite good at, if I may say so, and come up with a "Rylee" version.

While yesterday I felt like a broken record, asking Ry not to touch the playdough, today I told him to have at it. I really don't know what it would do to his skin if he played with the regular stuff and I really don't want to find out. His wheat allergy shows up as an IgG on his allergy patch test. This is also known as an intolerance. However, I call it an allergy. I know these aren't the same, but many people don't know this. When they hear the word intolerance, it does not always have the same intensity as the word allergy. So to keep it easier on all of us, I lump all his intolerances and allergies together and refer to them as allergies.

This playdough was really simple to make. I came across some regular playdough recipes and pretty much just swapped out the flour for brown rice and tapioca flours. I have this addiction to putting tapioca flour into everything I bake. I'm not sure if it makes things better or not, but it works, so the playdough got the same treatment :-)

For coloring, I put turmeric in it to make it yellow. I want to make more, trying blueberry juice for purple and beet juice for pink (possibly red, but it may be a stretch). Any other ideas on natural food colorings would be greatly appreciated! I'm still figuring that out more by experimentation.

Right now, I have our playdough in a large ziploc bag, where it will hopefully last awhile. We've already played with it a couple times today and Ry's pretty excited. He does such an awesome job understanding what he can/cannot eat, that it was a bit harder yesterday since playdough isn't a food. He just didn't quite get why  he couldn't play with it. Poor guy, but he has his own version now and is smiling about it (I am, too)!

Homemade Gluten-Free Playdough

1 cup brown rice flour
1/2 cup tapioca flour
1/2 cup salt
2 tablespoons cream of tartar
1 cup water
1 tablespoon palm shortening
1 teaspoon turmeric (for yellow)

1.  Mix together dry ingredients in medium saucepan, add water and palm shortening.

2.   Stir over medium-low heat for about 5-7 minutes, until playdough forms a ball.

3.  Let cool and have fun!
