Every February 14, conversations revolve around aphrodisiacs that promise to ignite the flame of passion. However, few warn about those foods that, far from stoking the fire, mercilessly extinguish it. When planning a romantic dinner, it is crucial to know which ingredients should be avoided so as not to ruin the evening. Foods such as garlic, onions, cauliflower or broccoli can cause bad breath, gas or bloating. Avoid products that can make us sleepy and those that, because they are too caloric or copious, would make digestion difficult. These foods, in the short term, can turn a promising night into a complete fiasco. However, there are other ingredients that unknowingly conspire against sexual desire and libido in the long run. It's time to unmask those silent saboteurs that directly and negatively affect our sexual health.
1. Red and processed meats
Meats, especially processed meats, are rich in saturated fats and cholesterol. A diet high in these components can negatively affect blood circulation, essential for sexual function. American nutritionist Cynthia Sass points out in her book "S.A.S.S! Yourself Slim" that a diet based on heavy meats can lead to conditions that affect circulation and sexual function.
2. Processed and fried foods
Processed and fried foods contain high levels of trans and saturated fats, which can clog arteries and reduce blood flow to the sexual organs. In addition, they have been associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, which can cause sexual health problems in both sexes.
3. Soybeans
Although soy is praised for its nutritional benefits, its high phytoestrogen content could alter hormonal balance. A Harvard University study identified an association between high soy consumption and lower sperm concentration and causing erectile dysfunction; however, more research with larger and more diverse samples is needed to establish a direct causal relationship.
4. High-fat dairy products
Products such as ice cream and certain cheeses may induce drowsiness and digestive discomfort. During the menstrual period, their consumption may increase abdominal bloating, affecting comfort and sexual desire.
5. Excessive alcohol
Although a drink can be disinhibiting, excessive alcohol consumption depresses the central nervous system, decreasing arousal and sensitivity. It can lead to erectile dysfunction, difficulties in reaching orgasm or even premature ejaculation.
6. Artificial sweeteners
Sweeteners such as aspartame can interfere with the production of serotonin, a key neurotransmitter in the regulation of mood and sexual desire. Nutrition specialist Rachel Fiske warns that these sweeteners can negatively affect normal sexual behavior.
7. Sugary drinks
The consumption of soft drinks and other sugary beverages can alter blood glucose levels, affecting energy and sexual desire. In addition, regular intake has been linked to an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, which can cause sexual health problems.
8. Caffeine in excess
Although coffee can have stimulant effects, its excessive consumption can alter cortisol levels, a hormone that directly influences libido. Cortisol and testosterone have been shown to have an inverse relationship. This scientific study, published in the journal Stress in 2023, points out how acute and prolonged stress can influence cortisol and testosterone concentrations in healthy men.
9. Foods high in sodium
A diet high in salt can raise blood pressure and reduce blood flow to the sexual organs, affecting arousal and performance. It is advisable to moderate consumption of processed foods and opt for healthier options.
10. Refined sugars
Excessive consumption of refined sugars can lead to imbalances in insulin levels, which can affect sex hormone production and decrease libido. In addition, a diet high in sugars has been linked to an increased risk of obesity and diabetes, conditions that can negatively affect sexual health.
